I think you might want to post what you're certian on, parts wise and what you're still thinking about now.

Fortron are a good brand, you're not overclocking all that much (if at all) so there's no need for you to go for the top of the line PSU range.

I would strongly recomend ditching the 2 gigs value ram idea and get 1 gig of quality ram, once you decide on a mobo go to the manufacturers webpage and look up their recomended rams.

Ultimately its your decision.

Motherboards can be finicky about ram, and value ram especially.

A quick theoretical build

Grand total: $1,266.98

Depending on your state it may be differant, but if you live in a state with no sales tax you should have near 200 for a monitor, if you already have a 17 inch value.. I'd save what you have left over until you get some spare cash to add to it for a monitor worthy of this rig..unless you can find a deal.
I found a Dell D1626HT trinitron for 200 bucks, not a bad deal.. Sure it was my boss selling it to me but hey deals are out there.

All componants found at newegg, depending on your state your going to have sales tax to worry about..

X2 3800+ is good, power supply, just go with a coolermaster RS 550W power supply, it has good effeciency and good power, ram just go with some corsair value ram 2X1GB. Hard drive just go with the seagate, the 16mb cache doesnt really make a difference, the case, a superlanboy is good, same with the antec sonata 2, basically personal preference on that one, nec is a good cd drive, many people like them so why not. A eVGA N517 video card is good considering its the highest clocked 7800GT to come out of the box for around 300 dollars, just my 2 cents

Just today a guy told me that the 7900 or something like that is going to come out very soon... so shouldn't I wait?

Seasonic = (I have one of them, wonderful)

BenQ = (for confirmation go to the forums at cdfreaks.com and search for "recomend DVDRW" in the newbie forum.)

Graphics card, wait for 7900 or buy a 7800 (more than enough for 19" LCD gaming, i've got one of these too ) and if you buy eVGA then you can trade up for another $100 or so (numbers pulled from rear end) to the 7900 when it's released.

I agree totally on this monitor selection. I have two 19" samsungs and one is 5 years old with no dead pixels.

I would go with just about all of that recommendation, save for the Power Supply. I guarantee you will sorely regret not getting a truly good quality PSU, especially considering the caliber of equipment you will be powering with it. Nevermind the fact that that DFI board requires a 24-pin main power connector that the Raidmax listed there only has a 20-pin (don't even consider adapters, they're just problems waiting to happen)
SPARKLE PSU
That's what I would recommend as a replacement for the Raidmax. Regardless of what PSU you choose, make sure that if you use one of the current heavy-hitter video cards, that you have a high amperage rating on the +12volt rail. I also suggest choosing a PSU with a single high amperage +12volt rail instead of the more common variety with multiple +12volt rails adding up to a higher amperage rating.

seeing that I got way away from the whole computer scene now for many months what do you guys suggest I do?? I still plan on the same budget but I can wait about until aug. or sept. if I need to.

I'v read up alittle and it seems that intel is going to have the upperhand soon. I'm just wondering if I should switch to Intel or not...

thanks again guys for helping me out alot! I agree on the PSU tho... If a person is going to drop this much money on a computer you probably shouldn't get a cheap PSU... since it powers your expensive computer parts...

My budget is $1600 and thats including a LCD

Alrighty! I know some of you Lifers hate me since I still haven't boughten this computer yet but its now august and I'd like to get this computer built before I go back to school which is august 29th or early sept.

AMD seems like they're hurting since the release of the conroe. Seeing the price drops on their CPUs do you think its best to stick with AMD or go with the new conroe?

I don't know whats going on with the video cards. Will anyone fill me in?

HDD: Seagate seems like a good brand to buy still but what version to buy! there's just oo many versions!

Ram: Out of it I donno whats up or down now that I may be going for a conroe...:?

PSU, CASE=i'll figure it out

LCD: I was looking at a 19 in LCD anyone know of any good ones that have come out?

EDIT: I'm going to let this thread Die
