I learned a relevant tactic from a ~90 year old customer: He had all his marbles but his mobility was fairly shot and he had carers coming in who did his shopping. He typed up a generic shopping list on his computer of all the things he was likely to ever want, then before they arrived he printed out a copy then ticked the items he wanted them to get on that occasion.

On my phone, I have the generic list then next to an entry I'll usually write how many I have or sometimes I'll write how many I want. When I do a stock-take, I re-write the have/need bits of information and leave the item list intact.

The other advantage is when I'm either preparing for a shopping trip (though these days we tend to do online deliveries) or I'm going to a supermarket without prior planning, the content of the generic list serves as a reminder of items I ought to consider.
I have a cargo bike, and my supermarkets, work and children's school are all within 800m of my home, so I have very little commute, and shopping is sometimes just where I unload my brain before return home from work.

I keep a shopping list in my Samsung notes. Probably 10 or so most commonly bought things on it...The app has the option of "check the box" which also runs a line through items when checked.
Before we go shopping, we take inventory of the fridge and pantry, uncheck the items we want...then as we do our shopping, I check off the items we put in the cart.
One of these days I REALLY need to properly organize that list...

We have a small badly over-priced IGA store about a mile from the house. It's fine for "oh shit, I need XYZ to finish dinner," but we drive about 25 miles into the nearest "big city" (25,000 population for the two adjoining cities) to do our shopping at Walmart and Safeway. We save more than enough to pay for the gas...and usually a meal out.

Yeah, the differences of supermarkets and distances in US and Denmark is quite big. We have four different supermarkets to choose from within this radius of 800m, three which are considered "discount" and one where you can get more luxurious goods which also have their own baker and butcher. I live in a small city of ~3000 people.

So I tried to make a small map and unless we go on a trip, my daily life is within this circle with a radius ~500m

I have to go nearly that far just to get out of my neighborhood (but there's only one access road, and I'm at basically the furthest possible point from it). Most of my regular activities are within 4 miles/6.5km though. So I've probably only driven about 2,500 miles this year.

How big are your supermarkets?

Boomer's experience would describe any "well-water" area of the US. Where I'm at, one example would be between Frederick and Germantown MD.

But once you're in a suburb city, the stores become frequent in reoccurrence in smaller radius. It's a driveable radius. Whole Foods, Safeway, Giant (local), Harris Teeter, Aldi.
Then you have the over priced "pharmacies" like CVS and Dollar stores supplementing the grocery stores for food.

Full service is more the norm than the exception. It's Aldi that is running on fumes(and their food is noticeably shitty enough that I, who usually doesn't really care where I buy, am wary of anything on their shelves).

There is some YMMV depending on how early a place is developed. The older a place got run over to construct a neighborhood, the more likely things are sprawled out.

Cheese tasted weird, milk tasted watered down.
And I'm not the only.
It takes a lot to overrule the habit of buying the cheapest food per dollar and only on sale, and Aldi manages to do it to me.
I don't drink cow's milk, the cheese I got there was fine, I've eaten any number of other products there that vary from "meh" to "good".

That looks about like the Aldi stores I'm familiar with.
Exactly, there's a law in Denmark that prohibits gigamarkets you can find some that are quite large, but nothing compared to US or France, especially when you look at how few brands there is to choose from.

Jeezus…those are barely bigger than most mini-marts in the USA…well…maybe Dollar General type stores.

The local Safeway is actually smaller than what you’ll find in the bigger cities/urban areas.

This is how large non-discount supermarket looks in Denmark:

Dude looks at a jar of pickled potatoes on the shelf, then just leaves it there. I'd have to try it just to see what pickled potatoes were about. You could probably fit four or five of those stores in our Wegmans.

They are actually not pickled, just in brine so you don't have to peel them an can be heated quickly. Not something you'd go for if you can avoid it.

That is what I hear that many expats miss if they move from US to Denmark. The large and diverse grocery stores.

Dunno if it's because I spent my formative years in Germany, but I'm cool with small stores, I just want to get in, get the specific stuff I want, and get out. On the plus side, I get a lot of extra steps in since I've got to go clear across the store to get all my stuff in the big stores.

My daily circle would be 15km radius. The weekly circle a 25km radius.

My driving is remarkably consistent. Everything is real close to being 10 miles away. 10 miles to work, 10 miles to the grocery, 10 miles to a friend's house... That doesn't include work related driving, which could be anything. I guess ten miles is my limit. There's places I think I might want to go, and I think "Nah, I don't feel like making the drive..."

Me, about 40'. Recliner, bathroom, kitchen, repeat. No sense in overexerting myself.

Irl, 1.5 mi to the office. 1 mi in the other direction to food lion, next to my gym. If the ring of power didn't control my travels, I'd put more miles on the bike.

Such is life.

Exactly.

You knew of pen and paper as a child and that Internet was no thrill ride with 56k speeds or worse.
Depending on income levels, you either had a slow beige box or no computers at all.

We had 56k up until 2005 or so.

Windows 95 with 64MB of ram until 2002ish when we upgraded to a Windows XP machine, complete with Pentium 4 and a GeForce4 MX420 (the shitty OEM-only version of the 440, which was already just a rebadged GeForce2). I played through Half-Life 2 in the DX7 fallback mode on that machine. Good times.

But my brain has been crippled by smartphones since then.

I would not miss it at all. This is the local Aldi, quite small for the U.S. - 360 view

I am always impressed with how much they have without all the wasted space. It is true you have to learn what to buy and what not to quality wise. We quickly developed seasonal favorites. Dig the biz model too. Must suck to work for though, as the employee churn is crazy.

I type out the shopping list in gmail on the PC, then send it to my phone. Easy Peasy
