My Poorly MacBook

After the state of my MacBook cropped up in another thread, I decided to share some pictures of my poorly MacBook.

To say I've looked after the poor thing is, well, a blatant lie. Well, I am careful with expensive things like laptops, but as it became more and more damaged I was more and more reckless and the damage seems to increase exponentially.

A summary of events for you:
Around June 2006 - I get nice new shiny MacBook
Around February 2007 - I drop my MacBook from the front steps of my house onto a concrete drive. Big dent and crack.
Around Sep 2007 - I fall asleep on my bed with the MacBook on my lap, and it falls onto a wooden floor whilst still open... ouch. Screen gets horribly damaged, but remains usuable (sort of)
Around March 2008 - I leave the MacBook in a gazebo, torrential rain ensues and truly soaks my laptop through whilst it is still on. Incredibly, after some rest in a warm dry place, it fires up but only on AC power. Over the next few weeks battery swells up to alarming size. But MacBook still works!
Present Day - MacBook still functions! Of course, it is subject to the above annoyances. Also the trackpad is unusable (always thinks I am clicking) but everything is fine if you plug in a USB mouse. Providing, of course, you plug it into the one USB port that still works!

I'm ashamed of what I've allowed to happen to this poor machine. I hope to get an iMac when they're next updated, which should be less prone to being dropped or left outside in the rain! And then I will be retiring the poor MacBook to a more relaxed life free of fear of being abused.

Remind me never to loan you anything!

P.S. I would (safely) discard that battery as soon as possible. BTW, how does one safely discard a ready-to-explode battery anyway?

Well, a waterproof MacBook probably still wouldn't survive being dropped onto concrete...

Whilst I don't doubt the soundness of your advice, my MacBook doesn't work unless it's got the battery in! And I don't want to buy a new one for such a pile of junk. But I want to keep it alive!

I think a 'rikadik-proof' MacBook is perhaps more appropriate. Although I highly doubt such advanced technology already exists.

Strange. Well, I would seriously consider just keeping it off then (and discarding the battery) until you can find some old battery cheap on eBhey or something, or else just junk the whole thing.

The battery could spontaneously combust, whether or not the machine is plugged in. I can't overemphasize how dangerous that is. While it may not truly explode, it could flame, and you might come back one day to find your house burnt down.

May it rest in peace.
I would also emphasize the whole "this-thing-could-explode-so-be-careful" thing Eug brought up

I have an extra battery I'll give you if you pay shipping (I bought a new one, which honestly isn't meaningfully better than the old one). I don't want you to burn your house down with that thing!

Thanks for all the messages and offers of support guys, it's truly keeping me strong during this testing time.

Don Vito - that's an incredible offer! Are you sure? It happens that I'm in the UK but having have had a look on eBay, etc the shipping may still make it a very economical deal! If you're sure you'd like to help PM me and I'll give you my address, allowing you to give me quote!

I am somewhat concerned about my house burning down. But don't worry, if it does I will post pics in this thread!

I don't feel bad about lugging my Macbook to University everyday, it's a durable little buggar.

But my god, rikadik, I've never seen such damage on a laptop that still works! It would be a crime to not find some kind of function for it, especially after chugging along for so long .
