Quad Socket 603 Xeon Server. Has 3 redundant PSUs, takes RDRAM, 64-Bit PCI Slots, 6 Hot Swap SCSI 2 Bays, and these 4 fans that are way bigger than 120mm and sound louder than tornadoes and push air like you wouldnt belive!

I just dont know what im going to do with it...Processors and RAM are bloody expensive, it weighs like 50LBs (Not joking), and thiers no tech support since its an Engineering Sample (Codename Shasta). It powers on and I almost wet myself once it did. Too bad I dont have the stuff to make it complete...

Think someone would buy this? It would be too powerful for a FileServer at home. I figured out it takes MP processors and they are about $250 a pop per processor.

Folding@Home. We could use some production from a behemoth like that.

Out of curiosity, how did you get a 4way Xeon box without CPU's?

I just put $245 down on an airsoft gun...A client of mine owes me a couple hundred for a website..I dunno though..I kinda need the cash that I could sell it for. Finding 4 MP Processors with the same stepping would be kinda hard.

Not as expensive as you may think. http://w2.pcsurplusonline.com/ViewProd.cfm?ID=4494

For $240, you can get FOUR Xeon CPUs with Hyper-Threading (imagine running 8 instances of SETI at once!).

And you just need to hunt around for RDRAM. I find it for sale on Craigslist a lot.

But are those MPs?

Of all the spec sheets I have found, it mentions to use MP Processors. DPs are cheaper, but I can only run two. On that site they dont say if they are MP or DP..Probobly DP/'s though.

Heres the story. Ive got a close friend who was a computer teacher for some years. One of his students actually grduated and was working at Intel. While on a business trip with him, we stopped by to visit this student at Intels Hillsboro,OR Site. We had lunch, and when we were back he showed us some of their scrapped engineering samples. This was one of them. A week later my friend recieved two boxes from intel. Inside one was a Quad Xeon, the other, a bunch of motherboards, etc... So a year passed and the Quad Xeon sat and sat. We were talking the other day and he asked if I could possibly use it because he couldnt. I gladly took him up on the offer, and so now its mine!

Yeah, but those CPUs are only DP (not MP), and they are Socket-604, not 603. (Yeah, I made the identical mistake... check the end of the dual 1.6Ghz Xeon thread in Hot Deals.)

Interestingly, those CPUs don't show up in Intel's Processor Spec Finder, so they appear to be down-rated somehow. It could be remotely possible that they are down-rated MPs, maybe, but I wouldn't know how to convert them back, if it's even possible.
