Will you retire from here earlier then that date?

of course not!

posting here is already a part time job - i suspect that in retirement it will be my full time job!

maybe by then i will be eligible for a mod position? :awe:

Yea, and I was saying that I'm going to retire @ 45 (this was about 10 years ago). Now, at 44 and turning 45 in a few weeks, I can see what once looked great can turn on a dime. Just half way where I thought I would be at this point (great recessions can do that....*sigh*).

Good luck OP....you may need it.

I'll be 33 when I get out of the Army (again). This time with a degree, although I may go straight into a masters... so starting whatever career is next at that age, I'm hosed lol. Oh well.

What do you want to do when you retire?

1. be able to travel (cheaply) for more than a couple weeks a year. would love to be able to camp in a national park for a couple of weeks, and do that a few times a year. along with possibly a vacation to somewhere else in the world once every few years.

2. work on open source or personal software projects. cant do it now because keeping everything straight at work consumes my mental cycles, but there are always a few things i would love to work on

3. as much golf and bike riding as i can possibly fit into the summer! and workouts at a gym 3 times a week

4. possibly teach a class related to comp sci at a local school/college

5. if i get bored, i would be open to contract work - 3 to 6 months of software development at a time for local companies.

basically, the goal is not necessarily to turn into a 70 year old dude at the age of 45. just want to be financially independent and able to live off %3 of my money, and not need to keep working at places i dont want to doing stuff i dont want to if i dont want to.

I feel like retiring early in life would be boring. My plan is to retire at aged 70. If everything goes as planned and my returns at 6.5%. At age 70 Ill have around 12 million in retirement funds to burn through over the next 20 years.

I cant imagine retiring at 45.

By then 12 million won`t even pay the rent......you have the republicans to blame for that...

He said semi retire, which makes a lot of sense. If you have enough money and the right sort of skillset you can probably get away with it, just doing contract work or part time work for top up funds.
Not full retirement, but a lot less work than full time.

Of course, he's assuming his skills will still be relevant in 15 years and enable him to do potential part time/contract work.

Do you plan on living like a pauper until you retire? Ramen noodles, roommates, and the whole shebang? I've been saving about 30% of my money and even that has been hard at times.

I'm set to retire in 2030 at 60. Mortgage will be paid, I have a life insurance policy from work that will mature at 59 1/2 to carry me to my 401K dispersment age.

This + my wife's pension + social security = livin' the good life

Software eh? Got to watch out for that rampant ageism. Once you hit 40, it could be tough to find new work.

Good luck with that pension (esp if that's Government) and Social Security. You're gonna need it.

Not if you can go into Federal service and buyback those years.

As for me i get my retirement when i am 57 as of right now. I will have worked 37 years for the government >.< Only 31 years to go......least the house will be all paid off by then!

But really i am doing everything i can to not rely on anything from the government...social security...im not even planning on getting it in my calculations. I hope i get it though but wont plan on it. Same with the 37% high three i am supposed to get. Wont count on it. TSP and my private retirement accounts are all i am aiming to live off. Anything else will be for toys and traveling

The pension is though the state of Ohio, it's not ran by the city, so that's 100% safe (it's not going to pull a Detroit). It's the same fund that manages military and congressional pensions.

Social Security drying up is fear mongering. If something did happen to Social Security, they would just make direct payments to recipients, which would end up being around .75 on the dollar. In our case it wouldn't make much of a difference (one less trip to Greece I guess ), but it's not going to go anywhere.

Are you talking about the mandatory disbursements at age 70 for your 401k or something else?

i think he means getting life insurance that lasts until 59.5. cuz after that you can get money out of the 401k without penalty, so no need for life insurance after that point
