My Review of Dune 2000 The Movie

This movie was fantastic. I'm not saying there wasn't its dry, soporfic parts, but I think that's a side effect of the realistic quality of the movie. Life isn't all guns and roses, we do have our dull moments in life.

As the movie approached it's end, the only thing that kind of bugged me was this:
Sci-fi normally takes me to the outer worlds of my imagination, as far away from this reality as possible. But as the Dune universe started to reveal itself, it began to feel too much like reality. No digital effects can obscure the earthly aspects of the movie - politics, society, war, etc.

But that's just a thorn. Overall the movie was superb.

BTW, this movie is 270 minutes. I watched it in one sitting, but I suggest you take a break. =D

Fear is the mindkiller!

Hmmm, I'll have to see it then. Where can I find it?

Of course, nothing will ever compare with reading the books...

And that spice thing reminds me of THE FORCE. I'd be tempted to say that the movie is a rip off of Star Wars, but wasn't Dune written in the 1960s? That's put if before Star Wars came out, possible even before Lucas conceived of the idea of Star Wars. Maybe the Force is a rip off of the Spice? But hands down...the Force sounds cooler. =D Use the Spice Luke! Use the Spice!

I thought the books were about 1 million times better than the weak, sci-fi channel production.

I got so fed up with it that I only watched the first 1 and 1/2 episodes.

For something that is supposed to use your imagination I don't feel there is an adequate substitute for the written word.

I found my copy at BlockBuster's in the New Releases section. It's $4.00+ though... so if you have the time to hunt around a couple Wherehouses or those smaller video stores, you probably can get it cheaper. But I figure, it's two videos though, so it's only about $2.00 a video. I think this movie was first release as a TV miniseries.

Long live the Fighters!

I don't see the similarity between The Force and spice but to each their own

Spice is responsible for all the cool psychic stuff you can do.. similar to the force.

Spice is a substance that gives people psychic abilities. It is worm poo.

The Force is an all encompassing energy field that people can interact with.

not the same thing IMHO.

Yeh man, Spice is a narcotic that opens new venues of the mind. The force is like Chi or something.

Anywya the movie sucked imho... The books rock.

I thought Dune 2000 was better than the original which came out years and years ago.

Both the movie and mini-series were good, they just couldn't fit in all the subtleties of the books.

Good sci-fi is supposed to take your imagination to new places, Great sci-fi makes
you look back on the real world from that new place and think.
So the new adaptation at least got that part of Herberts work right (for you).

The whole point of Spice was more like the battles over natural resources (Oil,
Diamonds, Gold, Coal, Farmland, living space) that countries have fought over
for centuries. The only psychic side-effect of Spice was to be able to see
into the future. And yes, IIRC Dune was out long before Star Wars.

George Lucas really didn't hit on anything new with The Force, he just came up with
a better explanation of something that most religions, mystics, and philosophies
are based in. Lucas used elements from many different types of stories to make
Star Wars, but neither it nor Dune is a rip off. Both tell their own story in a way that had never been told before.

Note also, that the one ability that Jedi did not have in abundance was the ability
to see what was going to happen. They could sense what was going on around them,
but not to the degree of predicting the future.

As evidenced by the fact that the Jedi Knights obviously couldn't see enough of their own future peril to avoid the mass extinction enacted by young Vader.

I think that Robert Jordan borrowed heavily from the Fremen and The Force in the Wheel of Time series.

I enjoyed the Sci-Fi channel movie. Now that it's available for sale, I need to ship a copy to a friend whom I have been promising a copy for awhile.

I dunno if this happpened in the books, but in the movie, they alluded to Paul as a "god." Does the book do that?

As far as the acting went I personally prefer the original movie. As far as the differences between the original and Dune 2000, I only found Dune2 to tell the 'whole' story out in the desert as the original really didn't do that everything else seemed to run the same. All in all I think Dune is an awesome movie.

Nevermind the fact that one of the books in the series is "The God Emperor". The later books loose the adventure/quest feel of the first (and most other fantasy books) and become very political in nature. I have yet to read the last book.

I enjoyed the novel FAR more than the movie. I only liked the movie, because I thought Sting was cool He is!

Yeah, the Dune novels were true all-time classics, some of the best science fiction ever written. I have probably read all of them 10 times or more, usually about once a year. It is always hard for a movie to compare to a truly great book ....doesn't happen very often..... ps, I haven't seen the second movie yet, so don't spoil it for me...as far as the first movie, it wasn't bad, but it seemed fairly low budget, .....the special effects weren't so special....
