Well here is a potential downer for ya...
Years ago (in the mid-90s), I got in touch with a friend I hadn't talked to in about two years. He had moved (bought a fixer-upper house) since I last saw him, and he invited me to come over, have a few beers, and catch up.
I knew he was into guns so I decided to bring along a couple of my newest acquisitions. One was a handgun and the other a really nice sporterized Chinese SKS.
I got to his house and didn't really know the neighborhood, or how "bad" that part of town had become. After chatting for a while, I tell him "Oh I brought some things to show you." Went out and got the guns, didn't have a case for the SKS so I just carried it out in the open, to and from the house.
Turns out, that immediate area was fairly gang-infested. The house across the street had seen its share of cops since he moved there. According to a cop my friend had talked to, at least two of his neighbors were active gang members (which I didn't know).
Two days after my visit, my friend came home after work to find his rear (screen and window enclosed) patio broken into and about eight large boot prints on the rear door of his home. Someone had very obviously tried to kick the rear door in.
Fortunately, my friend had already installed some heavy duty security doors (with appropriate framing) and they didn't get in. But I couldn't help but wonder (and feel guilty about) the possibility that I made him a target for burglary by letting his gang-banging neighbors see me carrying guns in and out of his house.
If its a questionable neighborhood and people *think* your dad could have guns in there, you may not have scared anyone away but actually invited them to target his home.
