Since I got off my ass and got a job, instead of begging my parents. I've decided after I get my ASUS 9600XT/TVD I think I'll look at sound. I guess I was a bit skeptical about sound until I heard 4.1 Monsoons. Now, that I've got some cash to burn and I should clean up my room *Shakes* I mine as well rearrange it to its best. I sort of a semi-perfectionist, I like getting things done right the first time or close to it. Anyway, here is my room

My room, dimensions are not exact.

Now, what would be the ideal way to organize everything? I've got the computer obviously and the desk which is roughly 25"x16" King Size Bed, Another 25"x16" Cabinet, 38x16 Dresser and other sorts of crap. How could I make this all fit?

Now for sound, how much of a difference is their between 7.1,6.1,5.1.,4.1? I am using a Altec Lansing AVS300s on a AC'97. You can tell why I liked surround so much. First of all, whats the point in 7.1? Where does the 7th speaker go? Since I play games, alot I'll be most likely getting a Creative Audigy 2 ZS. Since, it comes with a bunch of technologies with it I guess there isn?t a point in getting speakers that dont support them? Digital Dolby, THX, or do they make that much difference. What should I get? Under $350 (Speakers, SoundCard, and Wire) is what I am looking at.

I'd put the screen either on the side with the window or the right wall.
the put the speakers in the 4 corners. maybe on some wall mouts?

too many opinions on speakers out there. but there are a lot of good ones.

I too would like to know the diff between 7.1 ------> 4.1 sound. I'm very into functionally cool stuff, but I'm not enough into audio to spend an extra few hundred bucks for a minor improvement. I just want to, while gaming, hear stuff that's behind me, well, behind me, so that I know to turn around and check it out.

My computer room has an absolutely layout as well. Until a quality wireless surround sound system becomes available, I think I'm going to have to stick with 4 speakers. I've got that set up now, but any more would be pushing it.

7.1 You have 2 in the front, 2 on the sides, and 2 in the rear, plus the center channel speaker.

The only 7.1s available are Creative Gigaworks, right?

But DVDs and stuff only play in 5.1? Or 6.1 for some, right?

SO I guess EAX effects in games would still take advantage of all the speakers.

I'm pretty sure he assumed that you would realize the center channel goes in the front

This from someone who posted a picture of his basically square room with a 151 foot right wall, 13 foot top wall, 19 foot bottom wall and left wall with a 4 foot hole in it and no other dimensions.

The screen goes on the right. The right surround goes on the bottom wall where the 18" label is, the left goes on the corresponding spot on the top wall. The veiwer location is a foot or so in front of the closet, more if allowed, and the rear surrounds go on the closet.

you won't see any difference in gaming between 6.1 and 7.1, or between an audigy2 and an audigy2zs. So unless you do audio mixing or midi or all that other stuff, dont' waste your money, and if you're serious about it then you probably wouldn't be looking at anythign from creative anyway.

there are very few games/dvd's that support 6.1, however 6.1 will become more popular over the next year in terms of gaming, so a worthy investment. the 7.1 will take a while longer and is nothign more then hot air right now (gaming wise), perfect for marketing to clueless prepubescents who can't afford a belt to hold their pants up.... anyway, i can't offer much help with setting up your room, but i've always found that a "U" shaped desk setup is ideal for positioning 4.1+ speaker setups, that way you don't have to use those stupid little stands and you'll have tons of space for holding devices/gadgets/games/etc that you always seem to eventually use.

seeing how this might not be an option, perhaps you can work 2 desks together into an "L" shape into a corner of the room, barring that, you'll have to use the speaker stands and/or possibly hang the rear speakers from the ceiling facing down at you at an angle.

The only thing i've heard about 6.1 is that the rear center channel is supposed to give the impression of height to the sound, not sure as i only have 4.1 (upgrading to 6.1 before xmas-have the audigy2 card).

have fun

Well yeah, where else would it go? I also assumed that people knew the 1 in 7.1 was the subwoofer. Originally I included a diagram, but deleted it because the forums didnt keep the spacing, it looked like this
