So a few weeks or so ago my roomates parents, who live in Philly got robbed. They stole a laptop, a desktop, two TV's, different sets of car-keys, jewelry, and pretty much everything of value in the house.

His parents are basically computer illiterate, so to make troubleshooting easier, my roomate installed a remote desktop program on their computer so that he could access their computer anytime he wanted to fix different problems.

A day or two after the robbery my roomate was able to connect to the remote desktop on the stolen computer, and was able to get all the network information (IP, ISP, etc...). He turned this information over to the detectives who were working on the case, and they went to the ISP, who cooperated with them, and gave them a location.

update:

LOL. This is good. My roomate was also able to get the guys email address username from his browser history, and he did a google search for the username. Guess what came up? If you guessed his myspace page, then you are correct.

On his myspace page was the guys name, school, and a TON of pictures. There were pictures of him with his family, and his bunch of thug friends. Most of the pictures with his thug friends were of them posing with various automatic weapons, shotguns, etc...

Then there were also links to his friends myspace pages, which also had names and locations.

There have been a bunch of robberies in the area, and police suspect that they are all related, and have reason to believe that these other kids are involved, and there will likely be more arrests coming from the myspace information.

LOL... fvcking dumbass thugs. The sad part is that most of them are still in highschool, and probably will only get a slap on the wrist. Either way, they are about to get owned pretty badly.

I will post the myspace pages once more arrests are made (dont want them to go and delete their pages or anything).

update 2:

Here are a few out of hundreds of pictures gathered from some myspace accounts. These thugs are in a gang of some sort called T$, which is the T symbol you see a few of them making with their arms. These fvcking morons give black people and muslims a bad name. As you can see it appears one of the little fvckers has fathered a child, and theres even a pic of what would appear to be his "babys momma"

enjoy!

Ill post the myspace pages once the investigation is complete.

Whoever bumped the thread for an update... the OP gave an update on 4/4/07.
Hey. Sorry for no update.
They used the IP to get a warrant on one location. Pretty much everything was recovered except for the TV and a digital camera. They could only arrest two of the kids (who were living at the location). Sadly, I think they only got juvie. Oh well. At least his parents got most of their stuff back.
I can see no further use to bumping a 1 1/2 year old thread for an update that was already in the thread; especially since the pictures are gone. (OP, if you want it unlocked, PM the mod account.) -Anandtech Moderator DrPizza

If his parents are in fact a computer, I suggest they stop all the downloading.

But seriously, that's awesome.

Edit: Hah!, gotcha before the edit

I don't know much about computers except for the one my mom gave me, and she put a couple games on it.

Awesome. By the way, try to get your roommate to post a dramatized version of his story with pics....

haha awesome. My brother owned one of his theiving neighbors after he had his house broken into a couple weeks ago. Seems the neighbor didn't realize that feet leave tracks in snow. There were footprints back and forth from the kicked in door on my brothers house to the theives back door. Dumbass.

I'm curious how he managed to access the computer remotely without knowing the IP address. Regardless, good for him.

it would be really easy to set it up to report it's ip address to a web server

just wait for it to check in with the new IP and there you go

Could have just has one of those "What's my IP" type programs on there. They run invisibly and take your IP and update it to a central server somewhere. Used for when you have a website that runs on a Dynamic IP instead of a Static one. Same principles here.

Oh I'm aware of how they work.

I guess I was just over estimating the inteligence of the robbers again

Simple firewall? Router? Format HDD? Any would have stoped him/her from getting caught.

Typically if you know how to impliment a solution like this you would be able to get said information without using a remote desktop client.
