He is a film cinematographer in training. He just got the D300 to help him set up shots. It has a 640x480 screen, wifi option, huge frame buffer, etc. Wow... holy cow, it is so nice.

Makes my D50 literally look like a toy.

Like I said, kudos to Nikon for such an amazing body.

Thanks for putting pressure on Canon to get off their asses.

I wish I could get one!
I only have a measly D80.
The new Nikons have amazing specs, especially the ISO!

LOL.....pathetic amateur would be more like it. My skill level right now probably matches an old 2MP point and shoot instead of the D300.

I wanted a camera that I could learn, and grow into, that I wouldn't want to upgrade for several years. I was afraid of getting a D40 or D80 and wanting to upgrade in 6 months or a year, so I splurged and go the D300. It should do everything I want for a long time.

No kidding, the D300 is like a compacted D2X with better ISO performance! I gotta save up a lot of money to get one, but that's gonna be my next big camera purchase.

@Garfield:
The learning curve will be steep, but very rewarding after you get your hands and head around all that the camera offers and is capable of. Lucky you, I'm making do with a D50. =P

yeah those are freaking awesome. I applaud Nikon for these two new models, perhaps one of their biggest jumps since they entered the DSLR market. For the present, I'm sitting pretty here with my Pentax K100D which is doing a decent job for me. Only problem is that I'm a concert photographer and the low light AF on this blows nuts :/. Oh well, at least I'm improving at manual focus. Hopefully Pentax will copy where necessary on the K20D (the only camera that matters to me).

while it'd be nice to have a true pro level APS-C camera from canon, i really don't think it'll happen. they'd probably kill sales of the 1D (though i'm not optimistic that the 1.3 crop will live longer than a decade anyway). the D300 isn't going to get any canon pros to switch to nikon and it's not going to attract that many amateurs (it is the price of a 40D and a nice lens, after all).

what i do anticipate is a couple of 35mm frame cameras that straddle the price point of the D300. there is no digital EOS-3 right now, so maybe a 5D mark II at a lower price point than the current 5D, and a 3D at a higher price point.

then we'll have the 450D coming out, but i think they need a couple more cameras in the low end. even a repackaged 350D (so that its a 'new' product) would work in the sub 500 market.

i think as computer and consumer electronics people we're used to rapid advancement and counter punches, however that hasn't been the situation in camera equipment ever. most changes happen over the course of years (only one change happened overnight, the nippon kogaku F). sure, cameras are becoming more and more like consumer electronics, but thats more on the low end. professional stuff will be, for a long time, slow to change and stodgy (modern plastics are more durable than, lighter than, and less expensive than magnesium? we don't care!)

how much does the D300 cost? I recall that when it was first announced, they were speculating prices around $1800. Is that still the case? If so, i'll have to go with the 40D since that's like $1300. Not a big fan of the XTi's viewfinder or it's size (although it feels pretty good with a battery grip). D80 is nice but I really want a DSLR with live view. I find myself using my S3's LCD a lot for low/close to the ground shots...but use S3's viewfinder (as horrible as it is) for eye level shots.

Yes the D300 is going to be $1799 until sales slow down, which won't be for a while. The 40D is a bargain at it's price. The D300 is more camera for, of course, more $. I got my D300 yesterday and put my D200 on the FS board this morning. I think if you want live view you should go with a high end P&S or wait for another couple years on a DSLR. It is making it's way to DSLR's now, but it is rather clunky to use on the D300 and isn't any better on the 1D MIII. I haven't tried the 40D but assume it's the same as the 1D mIII. Maybe in time, it will be refined into something usable. But for now it is of limited value. If live view is important, you might look into the Sony DSC-R1. It is yet unmatched as far as P&S cameras are concerned.

i wouldn't be surprised if the 450D's big thing over the 400D is a good contrast AF face-detect live view implementation. though it'd help if the 450D got a redesigned grip. come on canon, nikon, pentax, sony, and olympus can all make small SLRs with decent grips, and we already know you can (300D was fine). just do it already.

yeah, but the 300D is considerably larger. I'm also not a fan of the D40 grip either. I love the D80 ergonomics and viewfinder, but I'm more akin to canon lenses and low light performance. And I'm too lazy to switch really, need to .. take photos first.

I have to admit I still can't think of live view as a necessary feature.

I don't try to shoot level with the ground above my head, or level with the ground down around my ankles, and I very rarely see anyone trying to do this, with a P&S or otherwise. I don't really understand the advantage of live view in the latter circumstance anyway. You're still going to get much better pics getting down on your front and using the viewfinder than you are bending over and peering at a tiny lcd that you're holding awkwardly at arms length in front of what ever it is you're trying to photograph.

I do all my SLR shooting using the excellent viewfinder (D80) and it's a joy to use. I then examine the pic for any obvious deficiencies, rinse, and repeat.

live view can help you get pics like this
Dont get me wrong, i prefer using viewfinder over LCD also, even with my P&S. But a live view LCD would be a big bonus for me even though I'll use it on rare occasions.
