my roommate turned the heat up to 90 deg in our apartment and smoked my CPU!!!!! There were black marks on the bottom of the heatsink. That can't be a good sign... Anyone here have similar experiences? Probably not, because my roommate must be one of the stupidest people alive. Of course, I never say that to him, but he better replace it.

edit: I suppose I should make this relevant to some kind of issue. Ambient temps matter! lol

Edit2: I found out it was my power supply... It makes a lot more sense now. My CPU is probably not bad after all. It was a Raidmax 350W. I am going to get an Antec SL450 that has dual fans. I figured this was the problem after my hard drive started smoking I tried the PSU in my roommates computer, and I get the spinning fans but no POST. I reconnect his PSU and his comp works again... Anyway, It was the PSU. That makes a lot more sense than the CPU burning out. Thanks for the comments everyone

If the cpu wasnt sitting on the edge of frying already, that wouldnt have happened. Sometimes my apartment gets to over 100 when I dont turn on the AC and I've never burned a cpu out...why? Because it runs at a decent temp

my puter room routinely gets to 90 in summer. Agree you had improper hsf installation and it was sitting on the edge of frying anyway.

Agreed. Something was really wrong there. Turn the room to 150F, and then you might have problems.

Sounds like user error to me rather than roommate error. No way your roommate is responsible.

Definately agree.

Also, if that was the case then no one can turn their computer on in the summer time if they have no air conditioner and their house is 100 degrees inside. They will not be able to use their computer for the whole summer.

Unless he overclocked your room to 150 degrees you owe your roomate a big apology.

you don't have an auto-shutdown temp? mine will shut itself down if it hits 60C (i am on water and get <35C all the time, but run 2.2vcore so have to shut down fast if the pump fails or something)

It might be that the overclocking blew it, a fan broke, or the fan thermometer blew a circuit. You might be able to prevent that from happening again with a fan control program, like SpeedFan. It's free and has a lot of neat features that help other CPU and fan bugs. I forgot where it is, so you'll have to "google it"

its your own damn fault....if your CPU can't take a 20 degree swing in ambient temp there is something wrong

This is why investing in a good case with proper cooling, and a good heatsink/fan for the cpu is important.

An how does the cpu smoke um what I mean is it placed in a pipe then you smoke it or is it like rolled somehow or what? Flavor of the month athlonxp 2500 I just call it brain fried, em em good brain fried soup yum have some today. Available at your next thermal overload cpu store. Now doesn't that just burn you up!

Try some cooked goose later, delicious!
