Only if you drive around in that Prius with a "Earth first" sticker while jack rabbit starting at every light and trying to "beat" people, esp. evil gas guzzling trucks, on the highway going 95 mph because you're better than them, and thus getting 20 mpg in your Prius while you think you are getting 60. And being too stupid to notice.

Don't forget your apple sticker. While drinking an organically grown coffee.

It almost sounds like you don't appreciate these morally superior people.

Lulz, 12mpg city?

Never understood why people buy trucks; twice a year you can help your neighbor's cousin move their couch?

I just bought a 84 3/4 ton Chevy 4x4 pickup. I bought it to go wheeling in and because my communte to work is not long. Say what you want about pickups but you cant go offroading in a civic. I will also be purchasing a car trailer and will be making money off towing on my days off as well.

Vast majority of trucks sold to individuals in the US never leave the road...

I never did quite understand that. I live in LA and I often find myself getting out of the way for a prius coming up fast behind me. :hmm:

Well thats up to the owner but personally i never would have bought one if i wasnt going to go offroad, why pay for a huge heavy gas guzzling truck if you arnt going to use it as such.

$6500 is what I paid, the nice thing is that it has a few upgrades that I would have wanted to do but wouldn't.

MagnaFlow dual exhaust, Superchip programmer, Airaid cold air intake, Tonneau cover, 20" wheels, new tires etc..
Seems like a lot of vehicle for $6500.

Right now is no time to be buying a used four banger. I have seen a 2000 Corolla for $4900 just now on craigslist, shameful.
I looked at a 99-00 Altima, it had a couple of dents (small), check engine light was on and no antifreeze in the reservoir + the water temp gauge was going crazy and they were asking $5k, I was going to offer $3500 but it was gone the next day....
Haha, be glad it was gone.

I've looked at a lot of vehicles lately and the used car market seems messed up. In particular it's impossible to buy a used hybrid at a good price, for example.
97 Camry with 140k miles for $4k
LOL, the nerve of some people. I feel bad for the place you were that you actually went to see that, you must have felt sick to your stomach.

Actually, OP should have looked longer. I found some great deals:

$7995, 93 Camry
http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.j...=b&num_records=25&cardist=2165&standard=false

$7995, 96 Camry
http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.j...=b&num_records=25&cardist=2353&standard=false

And don't you dare not check these beauties out:
$8k, 95 Corolla
http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.j...e=b&num_records=25&cardist=935&standard=false

$7k, 91 Corolla (low miles!!)
http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.j...=b&num_records=25&cardist=1087&standard=false

$7k, 93 Corolla
http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.j...e=b&num_records=25&cardist=468&standard=false

Now, I know these are a little pricier, but think about the gas money saved, the venerable hybrid echo:
$12k, 2001 Prius

I live on a farm and my beater 98 protege has been offroad as much as any of our pickups.

and for the record dodge trucks have sucked since the redesign in '94.

Sure, and the vast majority of 300+hp cars never use anywhere near all their power and have absolutely no need for that much power.

Yet we have few complaints about these cars being driven daily, wasting all that fuel.

Everyone should just have 1.4L or smaller engines, because that's all you need to get to the mall and work and burger world.

You can rent something more powerful by applying to the local committee and demonstrating your need to drive such a vehicle.

Umm no, you can definitely use 300+ hp on any onramp out there.

No one is making an argument that you shouldn't be allowed to own a truck (without having a reason to). The argument is that it's stupid to do so - crap handling, crap interior and crap mileage and the upside is moving your friends large shit couple times a year.

Aaaand that's why I sold mine. Actually, more so that I didn't enjoy driving it than anything else. I still don't own anything that gets much better than low 20's mpg (except the bike).

That's kind of what I thought, a few years ago we(my wife) bought a brand new 2005 Ram for $30k, I never liked that truck because how much it cost and we didn't have a use for it.

Two months ago I decided to scale down so I sold my car and decided to buy a beater since I was using my truck more than my car, my truck had 214k miles on it, when I bought the Dodge I sold my older truck and "pocketed" nearly $6k.

Good move. Trucks are the shiznit.

I might only use my truck a few times a year and it never goes offroad but it's my right. If any of you would like to purchase my gas I'd be more than willing to get a four banger. Actually I traded in a four banger chevy Colorado that got 18 city 24 highway for my '11 f150 that gets 15 city and 21 highway while being a v8 and pretty much twice as big. Its only costing me $450-500ish more a year to drive it.

Wrong. I bet my truck has a better interior and more room than your car. I get 17mpg average, the truck rides like a Cadillac, and plenty of power while having that v8 rumble. I also don't have to ask anyone when I need to carry something or tow a trailer.

You missed the sarcasm sign....

Crap handling? You must not have driven one lately. They are way better than before. Not a BMW to be sure, but still.

If the supple ride had us expecting wallowing handling in the mountains, then the Grand Cherokee took us completely by surprise. Our 5.7L carved through the canyons with commendable poise and control, the anti-roll bars catching the Jeep's substantial mass in the corners while the rack-and-pinion steering held the car on an unvarying line.

Even with fairly tall sidewalls on the 65-series tires, the car's steering response was reasonably quick and positive, with far better off-center feel and response than Jeeps of old. The only time the car felt at all discombobulated was during braking on bumpy surfaces at high speeds, when the softly sprung Jeep floundered a little.

Other than that, this Grand Cherokee will hound all but the best drivers of sports sedans through the hills. Then, when it gets to the dry riverbed, it will leave them for dead.

I use my 300+ hp just for fun all the time. I sure don't need it, though.

We don't need nannies even hinting about what vehicles we "should" buy.

It's our money, we earned it, and we'll buy an Excursion or a Viper if we want it.

Im not talking about offroading a car can do, im talking rock crawling and mudding. But i agree a beater car can get alot of places you wouldnt think possible as long as you dont care about body damage.

And I agree about the new dodge trucks, thats why i went with a old chevy with the solid front axel.

I actually much prefer my old 1984 Chevy truck interior to my girlfriends 09 Toyota Matrix. Way more room and i actually like the bench seat. Also the seat is much higher off the floor which IMO makes it much more comfortable for longer drives your legs dont get cramped as much. And the ability to grab the tent and sleeping bags and head into the back country for the weekend and find a secluded spot with no people and no car access and just do some fishing/trapping and relax is priceless.

Crap handling? That's like complaining that a car has "crap offroad ability"!

You can't beat the utility of a pickup, and not just for "moving your friends large shit a couple times a year". You live in the city and don't own a house so you probably don't realize how much stuff people have to transport for house maintenance and things like that. Trucks are also more durable than cars.

yeah it really seems like he doesnt get it, i dont even own a house but use the truck all the time to transport things/tow things.

You can actually make money off it by doing long haul tows on weekends if you have a car trailer or can borrow one. If you undercut the tow companies by $100 on a 200-300km tow i can still end up with $100-200 in my pocket after paying gas for 8 hours of driving, and if you pickup a backhaul then even better could end up with $500 in my pocket for a days work.

be prepared to spend more than $6500 in repairs in about one year.

The thing that people dont realize about these trucks (by these I mean Dodge specifically) is that they cost a CRAP load in maintenance due to their low reliability.

This is why they are so cheap to buy.

My buddy bought a duelly duramax for what we all thought was a decent price. He has now spent well over $150,000 just to keep the truck going (retarded isnt it), and the truck isnt even worth $10,000. He was paying installments - couldnt make the installments, had his parents buy the debt so that he could manage it through them, but is still struggling to keep up with the costs. We tell him over and over again, sell the truck, take the loss, and save yourself now before its too late (as if its not already), but he doesnt listen - he loves his $150,000 truck. Power to him I guess.

Also I'm sure those 3 leafs in the back make it ride like airride caddy.
