I don't know what a shutdown execution cue is but are you sure it's the antivirus software that's the issue, rather than having joined the University domain? What's your OS, by the way?

Is it symantec corporate? We use this here at school and it works great.

What about spyware on your machine?

I guess there are a lot of possibilities. You didn't say what OS. If Windows NT, 2000, XP, or 2003 did you check the Event Viewer to see if you were getting Userenv / Event ID 1000 errors? If you're getting those at shutdown time you might try this little utility from Microsoft. I've seen it work very well at ending this sort of trouble.

As intimated before, if you're logging onto a domain there the way the network and your computer's network settings are configured could be causing a slow logoff. Or it might actually be the anti-virus, and if that was supplied by the university they should at least be partly responsible for dealing with problems it might cause on your system. If it is required by the network end user agreement at the school you probably shouldn't just uninstall it -- at least not without talking with them.

Sophos anti virus, xp pro, sp2. Tried it out once, but turned out to be a big resource hog. I don't remember if the shutdown started taking forever after I installed it of after I got rid of it since it was only around for one boot cycle... I think XP is looking for a component of it or something and just getting really confused on shutdown. Latley, it's been taking more than 20 minutes at the final blue screen before it turns off... (I have the ctrl-alt-delete login and all of the fuzzy stuff turned off)

I have been spyware free for more than a year and regular scans with updated versions of spybot and adaware confrim this. I have never tested positive for a virus..... this format has never been out from behind a Nat firewall and it has SP2.... I'm sure is something corrupt in the shutdown calls.

positive. I've had this problem longer than I've been running sp2. SP2 is great and I have yet to have a problem with it. I eagerly await doing a fresh format and going directly to sp2, but I don't have the time to do it now and I was wondering if anyone knew any quick fixes to edit the shutdown sequence

a couple of tweaks to try:

**this will require going into your registry. if you aren't comfortable, i suggest not doing it. to make things safer, however, go ahead and export a registry backup just in case.

go to Hkey_current_user and then CONTROL PANEL ans then DESKTOP.

Look for HUNGAPPTIMEOUT. edit this value to 4000.
Look for WAITTOKILLAPPTIMEOUT. edit this to 4000.

both of these will will force any running applications that are possibly not shutting down on their own to shut the hell down, and I mean now, dammit!

Also do the AUTOENDTASKS and change that to 1.

see if this speeds up the shutdown issue.

sounds like a marvelous plan...

my only problem is that with a 3840x1024 desktop, I frequently have Word or Excel screaming... HEY YOU WAIT YOU FORGOT TO SAVE AND RENAME ME!

lol, guess I'll just have to be more careful...

Step 1
# Newsgroup correspondent ?Sarah? provided one specific solution for this. In Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services, stop the Nvidia Driver Helper service. (You can also get this by launching SERVICES.MSC from a Run box.) Many other newsgroup participants quickly confirmed that this solved this ?extremely slow shutdown? problem for them (it?s the most successful solution for this problem to date). According to correspondent Gan Ming Teik, downloading and installing the new version 23.11 Nvidia driver also solves this problem.

Step 2
Correspondent Ron Spruell found that disabling the Terminal Services service reduced his shutdown time from over 2 minutes (hanging at the ?Windows is shutting down? screen) to about 10 seconds. To disable Terminal Services, follow the steps in the prior paragraph for launching SERVICES.MSC. Please note that Terminal Services is required in Windows XP for running Remote Assistance, Fast User Switching, and (in XP Pro) Remote Desktop.

Step 3
Correspondent Graeme J.W. Smith reported a more obscure cause of slow shutdown: In Win XP Professional, the Group Policy Editor has a security option to clear the pagefile at system shutdown. The same setting also forces the hibernation file to be wiped at shutdown. These processes take long enough that users may think that shutdown has hung. To change the setting, click Start | Run, type GPEDIT.MSC, click OK. Drill down to Computer Configuration | Windows Settings | Security Settings | Local Policies | Security Options. In the right pane, find ?Shutdown: Clear virtual memory pagefile.? NOTE: Since someone actually has to have set this policy, the problem will be pretty rare, but is worth mentioning. However, Forum participant ?roadrunner? reported that the personal security app Privacy Eraser automatically enables ?Clear virtual memory pagefile,? and, therefore, may be the cause of a slow shutdown.

Do the Above then restart so the changes can take effect then restart again and you will see how fast it will restart

Hope it helps.
