Yeah, like everyone else has said, it sounds like a phase that just about everyone goes through. I doubt she has an alcohol problem, but she is still making some pretty stupid choices (i.e. DUI).

Just do you best to keep her off the road after drinking. I drank pretty heavily through college (by junior/senior year I was getting drunk every night, which was probably at least 10 drinks a night). After college I cut back, and now I have one or two drinks a night, and get drunk maybe once every other week (i'm 24 now). I drink less and less as I get older (gets harder and harder to recover from...)

FA: I'd say flip out at her. She will never realize on her own that her behavior is self-destructive. If you love her, you will do what you have to.

You don't know much about 20 year old females, do you?

Your sister is drinking smirnoff ice's and she has a drinking problem?

I just made 2 pitchers of Margarita on Saturday so I can drink during the week. I'm not an
alcoholic.

Contact the injured kids parents and setup a meeting between your sister and them. Maybe seeing what she affected first hand (an injured child) will have more of an impact on her.

AA is a great start, maybe you could offer to go with her to the first couple of meetings. Support is very uplifting.

For what it's worth, when I met my wife she didn't drink (a recovering alcoholic). I continued to drink for another 12 years after that. I wasn't right up until my daughter was about to be born when I finally realized that I could do better for myself. I quit cold turkey and haven't had a drink since. Almost seven years now.

A month ago she got into a car accident; put a kid in the hospital and got a (yep, you guessed it) a DUI.
Was she convicted of DUI? If not, where is the case at now? A DUI involving an accident with injuries carries a hefty penalty. She should end up with jail time.

OP, you really want to show her what her actions could lead to? Take her to an AA meeting or even better a MADD meeting.

Smirnoff = lemonade.

But I would assume that there is a bigger problem at hand 0_o

and that with an injury accident usually you are tested regularly for drinking.

This makes less and less sense.

young people like to drink, what kind of "problem" has she had?

If you are old enough to enlist and die for the country, you are old enough to buy and consume alcohol

She already does

Moving out is overrated, I did it when on one of my coop terms which my job was 4 hours away

Well if it truly is a drinking problem and not just the over exuberance of 20-21 year old who hasn't been able to drink before, then I agree. Step in and try and help.
Like it was mentioned, the problem only gets worse until something really terrible happens that causes them to change their ways. For some that's hitting rock bottom, for others it just takes a big scare. I would say try to find either an AA meeting or a speaker that gives a talk on the subject and has been there and go with her so she is not alone. Don't ask her to go. Tell her she is going and pack her ass into the car and go.
That's my recommendation on the first step you can take. Hopefully it opens her eyes.

I agree. Unless she lawyered up and it has not gone to trial yet. The OP did say it was only about a month ago when the accident occurred.

I guess video games are cooler than women to you.

No you are not really dating when you live at home still.

Who said anything about dating? I'm not looking for anyone atm. I don't have a curfew, I have my own car, I pay my own tuition.

I'd rather take living in a good neighbourhood with my family in a 3400sq/ft house rather than living alone in some POS apartment using up all the money I earn on my work terms.

Maybe you grew up without a tight knit family life, in which the first thing you wanted to do was get away from them and see em on Christmas only.

This is an excellent recommendation.

I can still recall, almost 10 years later, a guest speaker at my high school talking about the dangers of drinking and driving. Her twin sister had been the passenger; her sister's boyfriend was driving. The boyfriend was drunk and hit a lamp standard at 160 km/h (100 mph), shearing the car in half. The sister was killed instantly but somehow the boyfriend survived.

The speaker told us her sister's life story in depth, with pictures, and showed pictures of the accident scene as well. There may not be much that shocks the hell out of cocky teenagers, but I guarantee you, there was absolutely no talking from the audience during that presentation. Many of the people, myself included, were crying at what a terrible tragedy it was.

This may be a bit of a tangent from the topic of alcoholism, but it may also be the sort of experience that alerts the OP's sister to get help before she injures anyone else, or even kills someone.

DUI's are generally accepted? By who?

I never said anything about DUI actually my statement couldn't have been any more straight forward.

Need more info. Is she drinking cause she's addicted to alcohol for the hell of it, or is she drinking cause she has issues and wants to drown them out? Might want to try to get case number 2 answered.

Forcing this person to AA seems to be the standard solution, but are you going to stick around to force her there each time? Looks like she got a DUI too so the first thing you do should be to take her license and keys. That and slash her tires.
