My sister-in-law had her Jeep Cherokee stolen this morning.

She was letting it warm up as she does other mornings, letting it idle in the driveway while she did a last walk-thru of the house before leaving for the day. She heard the sound of a car driving away, but it didn't really register with her that it was *her* car. She and the kids walked out, and it was gone.

Any other day the kids would have been in it, as well as her purse and cell phone. Today the kids were following her around the house and she had the other things on her, thank God!!

Supposedly the town she lives in (near Bellingham, WA) is very low-crime and just great to live in, she lives in a neighborhood that's part of an association, there are several others on the street who do the same thing (warming up their vehicles). She was just the "lucky one" whose vehicle they took. The police were flipping out, because this just "doesn't happen" there. They said since you can be in Canada in like 3 minutes, so the chance of getting it back is zero. Thanks men in blue.

To top it off she had about 150 CDs and her pair of $300 Raybans inside. Before you call her a dumbsh!t, read the linked story. It can happen to cops too, but they get theirs back.

Sample Jeep Cherokee pics 1 2 3 And she had the bling wheels.

UPDATE: Because this question keeps getting asked. She did NOT lie to the police or insurance. Insurance is paying for her car rental but she is out of luck on the loss of her personal property in the stolen vehicle. After a 14 day waiting period to see it the car turns up insurance will negotiate a settlement with her for the depreciated value of the vehicle. Hopelfully that will payoff the current loan. She will then have to start over and find another new/used car.

What a freaking moron.
A car in the drive idling is really really asking for it.

I had the Viper 130XV installed in my wife, and son's cars last year. It was installed by a reputable installer who did the job right.

These units:
  • Have tremendous range.
  • Will not allow the starter to spin while car is running.
  • Are fully customizable for duration of cranking, and run time.
  • Get used twice everyday the car is driven, all winter.
  • Can be transfered to your next car.
I won't do without one ever again!

Wow. that is just unlucky.

And something tells me this idiot will then lie to the insurance company as to how the car was stolen.

My car allows you to take the keys back out of the ignition once it's running. I'm not sure why, it's not actually supposed to do that, but since it does I just start it then lock it and leave it there. If someone wants to steal my $1000 beater then so be it, I'll just buy another one.

Wow that was dumb. If you do that, at the very least lock your doors and use your spare key to open it.

Don't listen to these jaded morons. In Canada, people leave their cars idling without fear because we don't need to fear rampant car theft.

I leave my car idling in the driveway, but I lock it and then use my spare key to unlock it when I get in. The fact that its a stick makes it a lot less likely to be stolen as they'd probably kill it getting into 1st, but still, better safe than sorry.

I'd imagine it'd be more to let the car (i.e. cabin/heater) warm up than the engine, which at most--I've heard--requires about 15 seconds.

This is on really cold days, like you'd get outside of SoCal. If the car has half an inch of ice on the windshield, you'll freeze to death before scrapping it off. Best to let the car run for a while to soften it up.

Does she also leave her kids locked in the car during the summer while she goes shopping?

Geez, if I ever caught my wife doing this I'd take away her keys!

Of course, we live in Georgia and park in a garage so it's not like we need to warm up the cabin any.

Better to kill the motor than myself. Anyway, its not like idling in the driveway for 30 minutes a few times a winter is worse for the car than typical rush hour driving in the city.
