She was letting it warm up as she does other mornings, letting it idle in the driveway while she did a last walk-thru of the house before leaving for the day. She heard the sound of a car driving away, but it didn't really register with her that it was *her* car. She and the kids walked out, and it was gone.
Any other day the kids would have been in it, as well as her purse and cell phone. Today the kids were following her around the house and she had the other things on her, thank God!!
Supposedly the town she lives in (near Bellingham, WA) is very low-crime and just great to live in, she lives in a neighborhood that's part of an association, there are several others on the street who do the same thing (warming up their vehicles). She was just the "lucky one" whose vehicle they took. The police were flipping out, because this just "doesn't happen" there. They said since you can be in Canada in like 3 minutes, so the chance of getting it back is zero. Thanks men in blue.
To top it off she had about 150 CDs and her pair of $300 Raybans inside. Before you call her a dumbsh!t, read the linked story. It can happen to cops too, but they get theirs back.

UPDATE: Because this question keeps getting asked. She did NOT lie to the police or insurance. Insurance is paying for her car rental but she is out of luck on the loss of her personal property in the stolen vehicle. After a 14 day waiting period to see it the car turns up insurance will negotiate a settlement with her for the depreciated value of the vehicle. Hopelfully that will payoff the current loan. She will then have to start over and find another new/used car.
