That is when I originally told the story more than a decade ago, you can read further into the thread to see more of my story if you wish. I win all of the "worst pain ever" threads, even though I never get a fucking prize. You have been warned.

I just read the story, i wish i drank some coffee first.
That must have hurt so much.
Like walking around without skin.
Luckily you are here today, alive and kicking.

That treatment sounds awful. In what timeframe was this ?
I guess the treatment was state of the art back then.
How is the skin today ?
Is the skin normal and able to stretch ?

Hurt so much is the understatement of the year. 3 months in the hospital of constant daily debridement in that fucking chair.

Skin is ok enough, it breaks/tears real easy but doesn't really bleed so that's a plus.

The links do not work, but i believe you on your word.

Ugh, sorry I pulled those from an old thread. Here is one pic I found real quick in my google photos.

You can see what I'm talking about right under my thumb. As far as flexibility, I have about 90% of my function back. My thumb won't extend outward away from my hand (think opening up your fingers as wide as you can) very far when going straight out but when going slightly downward it will extend out just fine for typing and stuff, hope that made sense. Took me over a year of physical therapy just to be able to hold a pencil with one of those big rubber triangle things kids use when they are first learning to hold and use pencils. If I come across any more pics I'll post them for ya.

As a small bonus, as a rightie with my right hand out of commission for well over a year when beating off I can now switch hands and gain a stroke.

It almost looks as if the asphalt shaped the texture of the flesh below the skin. Giving it that dented texture.
I guess that was the reason for the agonizing scrubbing they had to do to you.
Imagine that, you almost had a shell of asphalt on your back. Pfff.

Burn pain has got to be one of the worse pains. It's just always on. Not like a cut or a bruise where you only feel it some times. Can't imagine how horrid that was to go through.

I burnt myself with steam when putting out the camp fire a few years ago. Luckily it only got like one knuckle. But even that tiny little spot hurt so bad so I can't imagine what this asphalt injury must have been like.

No the asphalt had nothing to do with the texture. Roofing asphalt dries smooth anyway so it would have been better if it had

Besides there wasn't much flesh left to texture in those areas, that was all skin grafted. Pretty sure one of the reasons is that they punch holes in the skin they took off of my leg to stretch it and make it cover more. I had a custom made very tight fitting glove that was designed to keep the scarring down but it was a white ass glove that I only wore on my right hand so as you might imagine after wearing it at school a few times I started leaving it in my bag until I got home. On my 2nd or 3rd day one guy actually grabbed my hand, held it up and asked if I was supposed to be Michael Jackson. The pain instantly put me on my knees and the fucker was still holding my hand up so I hit him as hard as I possibly could square in the nuts with "good" hand. He let go.

Try to imagine the worst hell you possibly can, it was worse than that. As I said in my original posts, I didn't want to die but there were many times that if you had handed me a gun I wouldn't have hesitated using it on myself just to stop the pain.

Sorry, she has first dibs and I'm not sure you'd find them ribbed for your pleasure but hell if your game then I am too. Just as long as you don't eat my steak again, bastard.

Huh, I'm the sous chef. Pretty sure I can prep your meat.

And she asked for salmon Saturday. All in, if you show up.

I've had the ones where they bubble up and peal off.
That used to happen to us kids all the time at the beginning of the summer "down the shore." None of us, even the adults, were anywhere near as careful as folks are today. Burnt sking bubbling up and peeling off was common. No one ever thought of or mentioned the word melanoma.

That was decades ago. Now I'm in my late sixties and not one instance of skin cancer as of yet, so . . .

I used to have that too as a kid. But the severe sunburn i had in my 20s was something i had not before.
Perhaps because the skin dies off so quickly (apoptosis) that there is no real issue. And of course that it only happens once in a while.
There are people who are genetic predisposed to having skin cancer and the sun burn might increase the odds of getting skin cancer.
But there is also another reason or factor why people get skin cancer and that has nothing to do with getting sun burned.
There are a few viruses like hpv and a few herper variants that can also cause melanoma skin cancer.
As usual it is a combination of factors.
Lifestyle, acquired pathogens, amount of uv radiation might be a factor, but viruses would also be damaged by free radicals produced by uv radiation. It remains difficult to see.
But UV radiation is something to watch out for.

holy fuck man..thats pure torture

Literally. They used to do it a long time ago, they called it being flayed alive. Although they didn't usually boil your skin in asphalt first, they just peeled it off with a knife.

I honestly wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. Luckily today people with burns as severe as mine are put into medically induced comas for the worst of it.

Fun fact that I'm not sure if I said in the post I linked. There were two hospitals with burn units in my state at the time and we just happened to be putting the roof on an addition to the hospital that had one of them. If I was working on a local job instead of in Baton Rouge I would have gotten a cool helicopter ride. The helipad was right down the hall and when I was finally mobile I was able to watch the guys finish the roof from the window of the helipad door. I made a pretty good friend in there, a tree cutter who was in a lift cutting limbs around a power line. The guy on the ground accidentally hit the controls and sent his tool right into a power line. Or maybe it was a limb to the tool or something like that, it's been a long time. He had a big ass entry burn on this left hand and what I called a "blow out burn" on his leg so he couldn't walk. We would wander around the unit, he'd push the right wheel of his wheelchair and I pushed the left handle while he pushed both of our IV stands in front of him, the staff got a kick out of that.

He was a tough sonofabitch and I can still remember his screams from that damn debridement room, I probably remember his because when I heard him screaming I knew that my turn was next. Yeah, we all learned to listen for the screams of the person in front of us and as shitty as it sounds when I woke up and heard someone screaming who wasn't that person I was relieved. I never really spoke to anyone about that part but I'd wager it was the same way for everyone in the unit. There is no amount of drugs they could give you to ease the pain of them scrubbing your burns with a steel brillo pad and I mean seriously scrubbing.

Did I post, or did you get to the part where I tried to talk the shrink into blowing me or at least a handy?
