my smp really slow!!! why?

why my smp running so slow? i dunno wat is the standard score other similar system can get, but using xflask converting at dvd 720x480 resolution decode 5.1 48khz sound i onli get around 20fps, even a single athlon xp will surpass the score...damn

running photoshop 6 also seems no different when i set it to single processor exxecution affinity and two processor execution...

is there anything wrong with the system?


this is my system
abit vp6 mp 1.4 in yt bios
windows 2000 running MP kernel(not acpi)
256cas 2 sdram at 152mhz turbo speed
2x1.14ghz PIII

I'm no expert when it comes to SMP setups, but it might be only having 256mb of ram. Kinda doubt it though, so consider this as a bump.

maybe try run SETI@home and see how long on average to do a single job

my dual Celeron 300A @ 495Mhz on the BP6 with 384MB RAM does one job in about 12 hrs on average.

in photoshop you wont see i large difference, its made for smp support, but doesnt really need it per say, helps it load large amounts of data a bit faster, and cropping is a little zippier.

As far as decoding the DVD, is that a multithreaded application? The place you will see the performance improvement is if you decode and dvd and edit some photoshop at the same time.

Also in Dual systems its important to run 4 way interleaving on ram if possible to optimise the bandwidth, it requires all 4 memory slots to be occupied to do this.

your dual 300a was doing them in 12 hours?
hmm that seems alittle low...i had a PII 300 in linux doing it in 13ish and a single 300a@464 doing it in 12 if not less
