My son is singing a Hanukkah song in his class for the holidays...

Now, I'm not religious at all but I was raised in a Methodist household and actually went to church and learned about the bible when I was a child...as my wife was. We don't really believe in any god so to speak and we don't attend any church or subject our son to much, if any religious beliefs at all. However, I do feel a bit strange hearing my son sing oh dreidel (I had to look that up) dreidel dreidel for his holiday play.

I guess there are different groups in his class who are singing different holiday songs and by chance he was grouped in with the group representing the Jewish holiday tradition. :roll:

I'm not making a big deal out of it.

Not being Jewish, i could be wrong, but the Dreidel(sp) song has no Religious aspect to it. It's a song about a Toy. Kinda like singing Jingle Bells.

Not only did we sing the song back in the day, but we got free dreidels and a bunch of Jewish kids brought in latkes. It was awesome. I haven't had a latke in probably a decade.

BTW-Many many many religion threads have been locked too...probably more so than bathroom etiquette threads.

Well considering that you've taken the time to establish the context of your family's religious 'status' and, in doing so, have also attempted to refute any personal interest in the actual topic, it would seem to me that you are actually bothered by it. Why not just say it?

A dreidel (Yiddish: ?????, Hebrew: ??????, Sevivon) is a four-sided top, played with during the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. The dreidel is used for a gambling game similar to Teetotum. These are the letters on a dreidel. Each side of the dreidel bears a letter of the Hebrew alphabet: ? (Nun), ? (Gimel), ? (Hei), ? (Shin), which together form the acronym for "?? ???? ??? ??" (Nes Gadol Haya Sham ? "a great miracle happened there"). These letters also form a mnemonic for the rules of a gambling game played with a dreidel: Nun stands for the Yiddish word "nit" ('nothing'), hei stands for "halb" ('half'), gimel for "gants" ('all'), and shin for "shteln" ('put'). In Israel, instead of ? (Shin), the letter ? (Pe) is written to symbolize the location of the miracle ? "??" (Po ? "here").

The Yiddish word "dreydl" comes from the word "dreyen" ("to turn"). The Hebrew word "sevivon" comes also from the root "SBB" ("to turn") and was invented by Itamar Ben-Avi (the son of Eliezer Ben-Yehuda) when he was 5 years old. It was just an observation. I felt like posting it because I heard my son upstairs singing it in front of my wife and he has sung it in front of me a couple times as well. I'm not sure how I feel about it quite frankly. I had Christmas plays in school when I was growing up so I guess it's probably a good thing that they recognize different faiths. It's probably more how his Mother and I deal with it more than anything that will form his opinions as he grows up.

I'll keep an open mind and give him my honest opinion when he starts to question things.
