Sounds like a good school, exposing kids to the different religious traditions. I give thumbs up.

It's not even a religious song. It's about a toy. In my school, we sung songs about Christmas that included lines like "Christ the Savior is born," or "Come and behold him, born the King of Angels... Christ the Lord." You never hear any songs for Hanukkah about God or Moses... come to think of it, apart from Adam Sandler, I can only think of two Hanukkah songs, and only one of them even mentions what Hanukkah is about. I can name and sing approximately fifty Christmas songs, maybe more.

Promoting religious tolerance is a lofty goal. Perhaps you need to attend some of your son's classes.

You're not making a big deal out of it yet you thought it to be important enough to post a topic about it.

I've thought bathroom etiquette was important enough to post a topic about here...you clearly don't follow ATOT much do you?

I got the same impression. I am Jewish and had to listen to kids singing Christmas carols all the time, have to listen to Christmas songs at every damn restaurant I go to, but i really don't complain...so what?

BTW-I grew up a Methodist in a largely Catholic community. I remember in Elementary school when the Catholic kids would go off for mass once a week I'd be sitting there in a classroom of one or two kids wondering what the hell I was supposed to do. Religion is just another form of socialization. I'm convinced it has little basis in reality and a lot of basis in tradition...and control. I'm not convinced that any of it is necessary in this day and age...maybe I'm just enlightened.

So by the same token then, would you feel equally as "strange" if your son was practicing singing 'Slient Night' for class?

No, actually I'd be fine with that. I'm not going to deny that I have fond memories of my childhood raised as a Christian and I find great joy in listening to the beautiful music written to honor the story of the birth of Christ. That will never change so long as I live either.

There it is, folks.

There what is?

Not only did we sing the song back in the day, but we got free dreidels and a bunch of Jewish kids brought in latkes. It was awesome. I haven't had a latke in probably a decade.

Reminds me of this:

A blind man is sitting on a park bench. A rabbi sits down next to him.

The rabbi is chomping on a piece of matzah. Taking pity on the blind man, he breaks off a piece and gives it to the blind man.

Several minutes later, the blind man turns, taps the rabbi on the shoulder, and asks, "Who wrote this crap?"
