These are the letters on a dreidel. Each side of the dreidel bears a letter of the Hebrew alphabet: ? (Nun), ? (Gimel), ? (Hei), ? (Shin), which together form the acronym for "?? ???? ??? ??" (Nes Gadol Haya Sham ? "a great miracle happened there"). These letters also form a mnemonic for the rules of a gambling game played with a dreidel: Nun stands for the Yiddish word "nit" ('nothing'), hei stands for "halb" ('half'), gimel for "gants" ('all'), and shin for "shteln" ('put'). In Israel, instead of ? (Shin), the letter ? (Pe) is written to symbolize the location of the miracle ? "??" (Po ? "here").

The Yiddish word "dreydl" comes from the word "dreyen" ("to turn"). The Hebrew word "sevivon" comes also from the root "SBB" ("to turn") and was invented by Itamar Ben-Avi (the son of Eliezer Ben-Yehuda) when he was 5 years old. Different terms were used by Hayyim Nahman Bialik in his poems.[citation needed] While the only mandated mitzvot for Chanukah consist of lighting candles and saying the full hallel, there are numerous other customs that have come to be associated with Chanukah.

Did somebody say GAAAAMBLING?!?!? woohooo!!!!

A Methodist gambling!

I've thought bathroom etiquette was important enough to post a topic about here...you clearly don't follow ATOT much do you?

I got the same impression. I am Jewish and had to listen to kids singing Christmas carols all the time, have to listen to Christmas songs at every damn restaurant I go to, but i really don't complain...so what?

No worse than my kid doing a play about Santa Ana. At the end of the play the children cheer "Viva La Mexico, Viva La Mexico!".

BTW-I grew up a Methodist in a largely Catholic community. I remember in Elementary school when the Catholic kids would go off for mass once a week I'd be sitting there in a classroom of one or two kids wondering what the hell I was supposed to do. Religion is just another form of socialization. I'm convinced it has little basis in reality and a lot of basis in tradition...and control. I'm not convinced that any of it is necessary in this day and age...maybe I'm just enlightened.

So by the same token then, would you feel equally as "strange" if your son was practicing singing 'Slient Night' for class?

No, actually I'd be fine with that. I'm not going to deny that I have fond memories of my childhood raised as a Christian and I find great joy in listening to the beautiful music written to honor the story of the birth of Christ. That will never change so long as I live either.

There it is, folks.

I sang Pink Cadillac for our Christmas play back in kindergarten. Wow, that was like 20 years ago.

Haha, yeah. I remember that. They were tasty.

We don't really believe in any god so to speak and we don't attend any church or subject our son to much, if any religious beliefs at all. However, I do feel a bit strange hearing my son sing oh dreidel (I had to look that up) dreidel dreidel for his holiday play.

I guess there are different groups in his class who are singing different holiday songs and by chance he was grouped in with the group representing the Jewish holiday tradition.

I'm not making a big deal out of it.

Thought you all might find this amusing.

I'm 25, grew up in an area where there were 0 jews, 0 catholics etc. All baptist and even we learned jewish songs in school

That would be disgusting. They get soggy quickly. Maybe you could quickly refry them? I hate breaking out the Cuisinart just to make a few for myself though. It's a pain in the ass to clean that thing.

Bah, don't worry about it. We made Stars of David in kindergarten and I didn't even know until I put it on the tree (people said something).

I'm not religious either, nor was I ever exposed to any type of religion in my house growing up. But I can remember in Elementary school, we would have Christmas activities, and Jewish activities, and even Kwanzaa activities.

Looking back on it, it wasn't a bad idea, because it exposed me to different religious holidays and I suppose it started teaching me from an early age to be acceptant of other people's religious holidays.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Sort of a good thing since it exposes you to different things.
