I was thinking about the Fire but he likes playing games and I am not sure if it would be a wise choice for that. I do not want to pay full price for a new Xoom/Galaxy ect and wouldn't mind buying used. I will also be open to lesser known brands, not interested in super cheap tablets

Give me some suggestions please

there was a Toshiba Thrive for $300 on newegg this morning, but it may have sold out.

$350 for a moto xoom on ebay right now

you can get a refurb nook color for $150 on ebay, or browse fs/ft for a used nook color. you can run CM7 from an SD card.

Black Friday Asus Transformer for $250 or Acer A100 $190 at best buy. The screen on the Acer is craptastic though and so is the battery life. At this point I would say Nook Tablet with CM9 when it comes out.

Question - Why do you not consider the Fire a wise choice for games?

I was afraid it might be underpowered for some of the higher end games and thought it only has the amazon app store

Here's the thing, if you want a tablet to play games there is really only one choice out there... iPad. No matter what you get for Android, it will not run or look anywhere near as good as an equivalent game on iOS. For games on Android though stick with either an OMAP or Tegra core and stay really far away from Snapdragon.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus is the most powerful of all the Android tablets however since it uses a Exynos SoC it will be unable to play any of the games restricted to Tegra 2 unless you root and use chainfire 3d.

The Transofrmer is a good bet if you can catch it on sale.

I think he want's to stay on the cheap side, OP you can buy a rooted Viewsonic G tablet on Ebay for around $200, Tegra 2, dual core "10 with running market, lot's of custom ROM's to load if you like..

Dont buy the viewsonic. Its old and has a sub par sceeen. At the very least, buy him a tablet that will get android 4.0 upgrade. I recommend the transformer. Asus has been on top of things in regards to keeping the transformer up to date. The best deal I've seen is 250 on blackfriday at bestbuy.

Well if you can actually get one for $250 that would be awesome for a Transformer, myself, I could not imaging waiting for hours on end in a line but that's just me. Kinda odd OP's son already has pretty much the best tab with the Ipad2, a budget Android tab will probably disappoint..

Something cheap and hassle free, I think the Kindle Fire is an easy choice. It's got a nice dual core processor (better than Tegra 2 found in most tablets at the moment), though only 512MB of RAM and 8GB of storage (about 6GB available to the user). But includes the Amazon Appstore, not as large as Google's Market, but still pretty decent sized and typically should be able to find all the good apps and games.

Nook Tablet would be good if you don't mind some hassle. Appears to have the same processor, but also 1GB of RAM and a micro SD slot. Down side is the Nook Store sucks for games. So you or he'd want to root this thing and load the Google Market at least. Even just rooted and Google apps loaded, it pretty much becomes a fully functional tablet. And rooting shouldn't be too difficult. I just happen to hate the look of the device myself. But great value if you root it.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus looks very awesome, as someone recommended. But at $400, probably more than you want to spend.

A used or refurbished Transformer would be really nice. Imagine there might be quite a few available soon with the Transformer Prime launching in early December.

Get him a galaxy player 4" or 5". It's between $190-250 and does everything the android phones do except phone calls. Plus, it has access to ge same store.

Pretty sure Kindle fire doesn't have either a gyroscope or accelerometer, which a lot of games typically use.

Good choice. Since the Xoom was the Honeycomb Halo device I bet it will get ICS first out of the mainstream Android tablets.
