It should also be noted VAC doesn't ban immediately either. You can use a known hack for days, weeks, even months before you're banned. The cheaters, who people love to refer to as hackers (which they deserve no such credit), simply download the hacks from some skill programmer who has chosen to share their work. There will be cheaters who may never get banned, at least from MW2. They could have subtle, homemade cheats and never get detected. Now, with admin support on a dedicated server they could be banned from the server easily.

you didn't read the 2nd paragraph did you?

It's the biggest plus and the biggest minus of VAC. The good news is that it never bans someone that didn't deserve it. The bad news is that it takes time for the Valve engineers to discover and account for the hack, so someone running a new hack can go crazy on servers for weeks or months before they get dealt with.

see its there.

Valve Software has apologised after its cheat-detection software banned over twelve thousand innocent Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 players. There are other threads and posts on the Steampowered forums, and elsewhere, detailing the free gift of Left 4 Dead 2 and the unbanning.
Hello, Recently, your Steam account was erroneously banned from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

This was our mistake, and I apologize for any frustration or angst it may have caused you.

The problem was that Steam would fail a signature check between the disk version of a DLL and a latent memory version. This was caused by a combination of conditions occurring while Steam was updating the disk image of a game. This wasn't a game-specific mistake. Steam allows us to manage and reverse these erroneous bans (about 12,000 erroneous bans over two weeks).

We have reversed the ban, restoring your access to the game. In addition, we have given you a free copy of Left 4 Dead 2 to give as a gift on Steam, plus a free copy for yourself if you didn't already own the game.
To share your extra copy of Left 4 Dead 2 with a friend, you can 'Manage Gifts and Guest Passes' from the 'Games' Menu in Steam, or visit this article on the Steam Support site for detailed instructions: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_...4502-TPJL-2656.
To access your own copy of Left 4 Dead 2, visit your library of games in Steam. If you didn't already own the game, it will now be listed among your others there, and is available for download immediately.

Regards, Gabe Newell
President, Valve

Wow. So the "unsinkable" VAC had a problem?

Hopefully this will get people to take complaints of VAC bans seriously rather than assuming that VAC is infallible and the complainer is lying.

The fact that they actually used angst in their description sort of voids the apology, because they've included a veiled insult.

I love it!

Shouldn't you be worrying about the skid your Rockies are on?

Meh, I'm not really a huge fan of baseball. The Rockies also have a habit of raising hopes just to crush them shortly afterwards, so this up and down streaky gameplay is nothing new to them. I saw them sweep their way to the World Series just to get dominated once there, and I think that's the peak of what they'll accomplish in my lifetime.

LOL...take complaints for valve forum users seriously? Valve will have to gas several thousand babies before I trust them less than your average steampowered forum user that claims he never cheated. It is the prudent thing to do to assume they are lying and whining, even after this fuck up. Valve owned up to their mistake, a feat that is rare on any forum and has been successfully bred out of the steam forum user population!

I'll agree, people shouldn't jump to conclusions on users that are on this forum...but have you been to the steam forums?

Visiting the Steam forums can provide you with some amazing answers.

It can also lower your IQ with the level of posting that goes on there.

Example: Person posts on the Team17 forum 'Alien Breed: Impact - just a rip off of Alien Swarm' (meaning the UT2k4 mod, not the newly released Source version)

Wait... So they haven't fixed it at all? Did you at least get their "I'm sorry we fucked you" gift?

Look at the dates. He was banned in April, these accidental bans just happened last weekend. The evidence still points to the fact that he was cheating.

Since when is it a compliment?

It's a feeling, it's neither an insult, nor a compliment. It simply means anxiety, apprehension, and insecurity. It is often deemed negative because it is so commonly paired with "teenage" when talking about "teenage angst" which often implies that the aforementioned feelings are due to youth, inexperience, and/or naivety. Valve was apologizing for causing it's customers anxiety from losing access to the game and insecurity because they were wrongly banned.
