Seven years ago I was in my local hobby shop for some parts for my Losi XXX-NT and came across one of those small AirHogs helicopters, they were cheap and my brother and I got one each. We spent many days having fun letting them fly in the living room with little to no control other than throttle.A few weeks later my brother and I decided we wanted something with more control so off to the hobby shop we went. We spoke to the gentleman there at the store and even though he recommended time and time again we should get a sim we walked out with two Blade CP RTF helicopters confident in our ability to at least hover the beast, I mean after all how hard could it be to hover the bird?

We got back to my place and proceeded to unbox and charge the batteries. We also read the manual to understand the basic controls. Still confident we could at least hover them I decided to try. I go out to my backyard, follow the check list, and get ready to lift off. Needless to say in a mater of 10 seconds I managed to crash and break my new heli, my brother laughs and tries his to meet the same fate himself. We spend the next few weeks repairing them and spending sparse seconds in the air. We both shelve the birds after a few months and I forget about the hobby.

That is until I see a blade mcx and I am hooked again. I buy one and learn to fly it quite well.

Confident in my ability once again to master this hobby I go back to the hobby store and pick up a Blade 400 disregarding the advice to once again purchase the sim before I attempt a CP Heli. This experience ends exactly as my attempts with the CP. I spend months and dollar after dollar for no stick time only crash after crash. I get so frustrated i sell the blade 400 and the mcx and say I will never try again.

I once again find myself in the hobby store only to find them demoing the msr and actually get to try one. I am able to hover and am amazed how responsive it is compared to the mcx and, wait for it........ I BUY THE SIM!!!!!!!!!

I spent the next month spending a few hours a night on the sim and decide to pick up the msr. I get one and learn to actually fly it, spot landings etc etc.

I spend more time on the sim, I can hover a CP heli and do nose in and even fly circuits. I am too scared to CP helis at this point and just continue to fly the sim and my msr for another year. I talk to my wife how I want to try another CP heli but I am so scared of just breaking it again and again and can't spend the money on another 500.00 plus bird to just crash even though I can fly the sim pretty well, I mean I still crash alot but I really push it to the extreme on the sim sometimes.

Early this year I see videos of the mcpx and show the wife.I think this might just be the heli that gets me back to CP but I still am still scared of defeat.I decide to pass and stick with my msr and indoor fun of buzzing the cats and flying through the hanging light fixture in the dining room.

Well fast forward to this Friday and my wife calls me and asked me to meet her at Kohl's to look at some outfits. She surprises me there with a trip to the hobby store next door to pick up my mcpx! She wanted to make sure I got what I needed, the BNF mcpx, as i kept my DX6i radio and she did not want to get the wrong item. My birthday is coming up and this is my gift!

I am stoked to try it and get home, program my radio per the instructions and watch the videos on the included DVD. I charge the batteries and take it outside. I spin it up and lift it off the ground, I am instantly amazed as I am able to expect what the bird will do, I am actually hovering a CP heli!! My mouth drops into what my wife describes to me as a school girls grin and all of a sudden the blades fly off of the heli in two directions. My mouth drops open in amazement as my thoughts of flying CP helis is once again shattered. I search the area and find both blades intact put I am missing the feathering shaft and all it's hardware. I take a trip down to the hobby store to pick up a new feathering shaft all the while thinking I must have done something wrong. I make it to the hobby shop and tell them my story as I am pulling out my card to pay for the feathering shaft. The guy behind the counter stops and says well Mr. Rago well got a bulletin today that talks about this issue. I do not think it was your fault and as a matter of fact come back here late next week and we will have you a new rotor head free of charge. I am instantly relieved! I didn't cause the issue! I mean I really should have pre-flighted the bird and checked the feathering shaft to ensure it was tight. I did know better but just assumed it was truly BNF.

I ask if I can fly it with the stock head and new feathering shaft and he tells me I can, just ensure it's tight after each flight. I go ahead and pay for the feathering shaft and walk out.

Today I take it outside to try it out. I spent three battery packs out hovering and doing basic front - stop - back maneuvers and I could not be happier. I now really feel I can learn to fly these guys and hope to be able to do inverted flying by this time next year.

To everyone out there reading wanting to learn CP, do yourself a favor and buy a good simulator.

there's a reason they used to (and probably still do) make articulated training stands for RC helicopters.

Good story. I have a Nine Eagles Solo but I haven't flown it in like 9 months. I'd probably need a new battery if I broke it out again.

Do yourself a favor. Go get some crack. It's way less addictive and much much cheaper. Trust me.. I know. I started with a blade cp. Before I knew it, I had a 6S2P 5000 mAh per month habit. I was on a 600mm binge. Luckily, I discovered crack before it was too late. Don't make the same mistakes I did.

I have a honeybee mk2, fixed pitch. I think it's spent all of about 18 seconds in the air, and then I crashed into a bbq pit and broke a bunch of parts you can't buy anymore.

It makes me sad, because those 18 seconds were some of the most awesome 18 seconds of my life.

Careful of that helicopter! The feathering shaft being loose is one problem, the other problem is the bearings are poor quality and actually pull themselves apart. Look it up, there are a significant number of reports on this issue. I was set to pick up my MCPx last week but after hearing story after story about the bearings coming apart in flight and sending the blades flying I am holding off. I have been told they are aware of this and will be doing something about it. In the meantime you might want to wear safety glasses and be sure to not power up with it near you (or any loved ones).

*edit* Here is a comprehensive post on the subject - http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1405236

Yup I check them before each flight, the new rotor heads should be at my hobby shop today or tomorrow.

New rotor heads as in a stock replacement to what you have or a new design? Are there any changes? bearing quality or design change? If they do something then I will run over to my LHS this week and grab one.

I hope they didnt make you pay for any of the replacement parts.

Complete redesign, bearings cannot fail the same way allowing the blades to come off. Also new feathering shaft config IIRC.

I'm on my 3rd Syma S107 and looking for my next step up. Maybe the Esky Honey Bee or Lama.

Maybe I should get a Sim as well. Which one did you get?

Note to those who wonder why I'm on my third. The first met its demise after it tried to attack my wife and was kicked/stomped after it hit the ground.
The second met its demise while being controlled by some slightly tipsy coworkers.

Definitely pick up a sim, I use realflight g4.5 mainly because I got a great deal on it.

I've been tempted to pick up a Blade MSR. I had a simple 2-channel one (up/down and yaw left/right) from radio shack that was a lot of fun but died at the hands of a friend a year or two ago. I never really looked into em to see what was out there until a few months ago when I seen there's all sorts of affordable helicopters and even planes. The Blade MSR looks like the perfect upgrade from the last one I had, will probably pick one up sometime this spring. Some of the planes look fun too, and for around $100 it sure beats the price the hobby costed to get into back when I was a kid. I'll probably opt for the helo first though since I already had one and you can have plenty of fun even indoors with it.

You can't go wrong with the MSR, its a great little helicopter and will teach you the basics very well.

I've been flying helis for years now and I wish they had these little msr's and stuff when i was learning. Shit, we didn't even have gyros when I learned.
Tips for new pilots. If you start with a basic heli like the msr there's really no need for the sim unless you want to learn 3D moves for later on. It's that tame.
Also, just because they're small and cute don't think it's super easy. Trust me, the bigger ones are actually easier to fly.
Plus the little ones are not fit for outdoor use unless there is ZERO wind.
This hobby is expensive and addicting. If possible don't be tempted by the knock-offs like the Esky stuff etc. While you pay less up front you definitely pay the price in quality and the fact that you'll have a very hard time finding parts. Stick with the major brands. Eflite (Horizon Hobby) is great beginner gear because it's reasonably priced and parts can be found everywhere. Horizon has some fantastic customer service too.

have been big time into the hobby for several years now.
took a break this past year to get finances back in order after buying my car though.
this is my collection as of 2009
I had sold the T600 and both Vibes and replaced them with Trex 700Ns with YS Engines.

Now I sold all of them off and only have my velocity50 by Outrage.
need to get out there and start flying again..
and BTW for a Sim look into Pheonix.
Its awesome and as close to the real thing for helis as you can get.

will save you 1000s of dollars in crashes.

actually stay the hell away from ghetto Eflite as well for helis.. the Blades are garbage.

Invest in an Align and never look back.
Align, Curtis YoungBlood, Outrage, JR, Miniature Aircraft are the big dogs with tons of support and super quality aircraft and parts.
For engines YS and OS only for the most part.

As he said above prepare to spend a fortune in kits, electronics, spares and batteries.

Recently Flybarless technology has become all the rage as have large electric birds that put out insane HP for massive 3d and big air maneuvers.
I'm still a nitroOholic but may be trying electric soon..

Thanks for the post. I've become very interested in getting one, but I will look into the Sim first. Is Hobby Town USA a good place to go?

Coolest RC helicopter I ever saw was the one that Randy Quaid was chasing Richard Pryor around with in Moving.

Yeah, I made the same mistake with the Blade CP. I can't tell you how many times I've crashed it...it is sitting on a shelf in my garage right now where it has been for a couple years now.

I think you're right about the simulator though. I've heard nothing but positive things about those.

There is a parking lot near me where guys gather on Saturday mornings to fly these big electric RC helicopters. They do the most amazing stunts with these birds, flying upside down, loops, 180 degree arcs, etc.

I started on a eFlite Blade mCX. Awesome, awesome little heli. Never went past that one though, and it survived many a crash until it tangled with a ceiling fan.
