I haven't upgraded in about 4 years. I will be doing so in the fall. I'm planning on getting something like a Q6600, 8800GTS 640 (or refresh) - or R600 - We'll see what the video cards bring to the table in 4-6 months. I can't wait - gaming sucks right now. I'm looking forward to finally being able to play COD2 and then looking forward to buying and playing FSX and Crysis (whenever it comes out).

It still baffles me how people can stand having systems that slow. Even when I was in HS living in my parents, I still made enough money working at MCDs/Kohls to at least keep something in the previous generation.

Go Barcelona if it beats the C2D, if not then Intel is the obvious choice. The r600XT will be the best bang for the buck card when it comes in May 14th. I believe Crysis was backed till end of '07 so that sucks. Age of Conan will probably be the first DX10 game coming around August/September.

To me the best time to upgrade will be Q3 of 2007 when the Intel Quad core become cheap. *I have my fingers crossed*

C2D - Barcelona

I would not settle for anything less then quad core but that is me.

R600XT

20inch widescreen

I'm waiting for AMD's Barcelona and Intel's Penryn for a CPU upgrade, then I will take my decision when both are available.

And next month I will go R600XT or XL depending on my budget.

That's exactly when I am upgrading - after the price drop!

Depends on what one uses the machine for. The OP's box is actually quite decent for web browsing, office apps and the like. Which is what most people do with their computers anyway.

And though I'm a computer enthusiast, I too have gone through 'dry spells', in which my main reason to hold my upgrade was a decline in my interest in PCs in general, which fluctuates. Before my current AMD 64 rig (which I plan to upgrade this summer to a C2D rig), I owned a Pentium @200 MHz for almost 6 years, until I got a used P4 1.4GHz Compaq with 128MB of RDAM in late 2003 I never got around updating. My parents still use that machine.

You should be able to play COD2 in Dx7 mode easily with that setup. It honestly doesn't look much better in Dx9 mode and is several times slower.

Yeah, I played through most of the game on my old 9600LE (which is slower than the PRO) in DX7 before I got my 7800GS and was finally able to play it decently in DX9 mode.

Well, a friend of mine at work finally just upgraded within the last two weeks after using a Pentium Pro (yes, you read that correct, not a PII, PIII, PIV, etc.,etc.) for the last 10 years. I could ask him to pop his vid card back in his old box and see what he gets, although it is running Win95 I think. He did get the math co-processor about a year or two ago.

He reads these boards, so maybe he will chime in and post his stats with his old rig.

I only brought in about 100 to 200 a a week. Combined with my car constant breaking down, this didn't exactly leave a lot of money for computer upgrades. Most of the hardware I bought was used, hand-me-down stuff.

I'm not baffled. maybe he just doesn't have the time/want to play games very much. But good point, I have the system in my sig, and guess what. I'm unemployed! I don't have a job, and haven't had one(im 16). just an odd job every once in awhile(and very savvy buying) is enough to afford all this loveliness. AND I plan on upgrading to an x1950pro/xt sometime in the near future...

I currently have Warcraft3, Halo(illegal, borrowed files/cd key from a friend, I have it on my flash drive, i pop it into my pc or someone elses when i want to play), FEAR(multiplayer only, free download online) and WoW

When you upgrade, do you sell your old stuff, or just throw it out?

You can pick up some game money by selling here or on eBay, and there are some really good games out there in the $10-20 range. I believe apoppin had a game discount/trading thread in the software and games forum not too long ago.

I sell my old stuff. before I upgraded to C2D, I had a A64 4000+, 3 x 512 mixed ram, and a low-end biostar mobo. I sold 2 of the 512's for $65, and sold the rest of the ram/cpu/mobo for $110, bought my new ram off newegg for $50, open box p5b for 63 off newegg, and the proc for 120 off ebay. only out of pocket like $60 for an upgrade from single core athlon to C2D. I think I got a pretty good deal. Now I'm trying to trade my 7600gt and my ps2 for a better vid card

I used to play games alot a few years ago, so it was good then. I'm itiching to play again with everyone. Also, it'll be a lot better with Premiere and video/photo editing which I do on the side alot. I have a WD Raptor as my main drive, which I'll keep, and 120, 160, and 180GB storage drives. I'll probably replace those with 2 750GB in RAID 1 when I upgrade as well.
