I don't see how you got that analogy out of SLI.

Here are the benchmarks of moderns systems running modern games. Notice how as the resolution increases, the power of SLIed video cards becomes more and more apparent.

OMG lol... Thanks for the link... I never saw these benchmarks before. But this just proves to me what a waste SLI is. Less than a 10% in overall performance from a 6800 Ultra or X800... Shouldn't twice the money = twice the performance? Or at least something noticable?

It's not even worth looking at a 6600 GT SLI.. There's NO performance gain over a single 6800 Ultra...

It's posts like this that make me think that all of Edward Lee's posts are pure shens. Moderator, could you possibly LOCK THIS THREAD and maybe STERILIZE EDWARD LEE SO HE CAN'T HAVE CHILDREN while you're at it?

SLI is like putting sails on an Aircraft Carrier, putting a parchute on a bird, like putting a 3 wheels on a motorcycle... sure it works but just how practical is it?

jvarszegi,
You may not appreciate my opinions, but that doesn't mean people out there appreciate your opinions any more than mine. But you know what? Free speech is what made this country so great. Don't you agree?
So if you don't like what I said go to Iran, or North Korea, or any number of places where you can censor other people's opinions. Otherwise if you have something intelligent to say, say it without having to put down other people. Otherwise you have nothing intelligent to say.

This comes from a person who said this "SLI is stupid. Anyone who buys an SLI system is stupid. I've heard all the arguements for SLI and they're all stupid. "

Quote from Anandtech's sli review: "From a performance standpoint, SLI is just about as good as it gets. If you have the budget for it, a pair of GeForce 6800GTs will let you run at 1600 x 1200 with 2X or 4X AA enabled in the latest games while still maintaining a very smooth gaming experience ? something that no single card is able to do." link: http://www.anandtech.com/video...c.aspx?i=2284&p=18

SLI with 2 video cards is praticle for some situations and unpracticle for others. Buying a SLI mother board and having the option to run 1 or 2 video cards is very practicle. For a slight cost, you increase your future upgrade options.

Someone put a little too much dickhead in their coffee this morning. I would never buy an sli board but that doesnt stop the fact that its worth buying as an upgrade path once this thing gets mapped out. I guarantee that SLI will become standard for midrange boards by the end of 05. Wait and c.

if 60 fps is your max, then if there is a lot of items to be drawn like explosions or textures, that 60 fps may drop to 10-20. If you are chugging along at 240 fps you will not notice a 40-50 fps drop in performance.

yes that is what i was thinking also. and for what its worth if i am gonna spend 2500 on a computer might as well add 1k to it. (still considering duel ultra's)

I just dont want to end up on the wrong end 2 yrs down the road.. yea i could stick with agp but pci-e is (once again i hope) gonna be here for abit...

do i need duel ultras, no not really, (all i have is a crt 19" or so(may be a 20"). but its only money..(hehe)

since i decided to get a new comp (old one is 1.?? and can't even run WoW) i might as well try to get the newest pc with the latest tech. is there a chance sli wont make it..maybe. but at least with nvida, at least they are gonna be around for a bit promoting the tech.

Once i get closer to saving the money...(month or 2, (wife wants a new stove, micro wave) around tax time i should be fully funded to get one....

more research required....and as you will see more questions to you guys....

thanks again!!!

It is a waste of money right now and is only for bragging rights. By the time any system is properly stressed by a new game the current sli cards will likely be slower than a single card. I can understand back in the voodoo 2 days, when video cards were underpowered, but the top end cards now let you crank the AA and resolution, and it's totally uneccessary to have SLI.

ALOT of people bought the Dell 2001FP, and the native resolution on that thing is 1600x1200. If you crank the AA up to 4X and the AF to 8X, a 6800Ultra takes a pretty good shot in performance. HL2 may drop under 60FPS and Doom3 will drop to just over 40FPS in some benchmarks (and that is just the average). I don't think asking for a MINIMUM of 60FPS is "bragging rights."

if i made a few bucks an hour more, I'd probably splurge on a dual 6800GT setup, but I just can't justify that much on 2 videocards for no real improvement other than to see the numbers go through the roof even more than they already are.

but I would love to be able to have an SLi setup just because!!!

(and yes 30 fps is to run relitively smoothly... i didnt say it was great but it is fine)

also i didnt say that an x800xt could pull those frame rates off with 1920x1440 or 2048x1536... SLI couldnt even pull that off (SLI doesnt give you that much of a boost in performance)... First off, most LCD's (well ones at 19 inches or below which most people have) cant even pull off 1600x1200 so... AND NOBODY WOULD WANT TO PLAY AT THOSE RESOLUTIONS BECAUSE THEY ARE WAY TO SMALL!! THERE IS NO REASON TO GO TO THAT... even 1600x1200 is pushing it a little...
Also i meant that an x800xt could pull off 40 fps on doom 3 with 4xAA and 8xAF with 1600x1200 or below!

You need to check Tom's Hardware benchmarks.
http://graphics.tomshardware.c...mation_further_reading
Using HL2 and highest 1600x1200 settings...
The x800xt is a mere 9 fps over an XL version.
The 6800 GT SLI is just over 15 fps ahead of the x800xt.

If you only want to run at 60 fps then the x800xt you purchased was overkill. BUT you could have purchased one 6800 GT for less and been just above 65 fps now and add a 2nd 6800 Gt when prices come down and you are no longer getting 60 fps.

In another words sli doesn't have to cost you more now. If you have a car with two gas tanks no one is making you keep them both full or even use the 2nd at all if you desire. I understand why SLI was really hard to argue for when the A8N-SLI board was at 300 bucks but it is at just under 200 now and is in stock as opposed to the chaintech vnf4 you have chosen. Is it worth it to go 70 bucks higher and get the potential benefit of SLI? To me but its a personal decision. There are guys on here quite happy running athlon xp.

I've decided FOR ME ther eis no way I could justify building out a new system right now and not get pci-express and sli for the current prices. I know it will be 2nd generation technology in 6 months buts better than it being 3rd generation in that time span. Usually in 3rd or 4th generation is where you can no longer play the newest games. I'd like to have at least 2 yars worth of upgrades to look forward to and then possibly another year of being lowish mid-levbel but acceptable.

I just finished my SLI rig and I'll tell u what, I've been upgrading cutting edge for many years and SLI
is the most exciting if not the most radical performance gain I've seen in quite some time. Most who are critical are the very ones who are:#1 just not willing to shell out the bucs but are still too curious,
#2 trying to convince themselves that they are not really missing out on anything,
#3 just plain flat out can't financialy afford it, but still wishes they could :You know, like the wannabe classic car owners of the world that drive F150 pickup trucks and work in the factory all day just day dreamin about that vintage 1969 cherry red Camaro Z-28 w/the 4-speed white pearl handle shifter.
Why else would they post here about something they know absolutely nothing about other than the many reviews and marketing nfo that they spend most of they're time reading?????
Therefore I will not post my frame rates, performance increases & benchmarks, because it only adds fuel to the fire.

Not much to bragg about here huh????
