I have nothing better to do at the moment, and this idea just occurred to me.

Aright, I think we can all here agree that at this moment MTV promotes most of the ?popular? music. They try to follow trends and play artists who they believe will make the most impact (and money for them). Now, its no secret that 99% of this is absolutely crap, especially today?s R&B and Rap?

I myself listen and play Rock, Blues, Grunge mostly old school stuff, but I have much respect for real artists, the beginning rap scene, and later on people like 2pac, who actually had something to say. I was watching one of the new rap videos (can?t remember who it was, but not famous yet) the other day, and I just started laughing, I mean those guys truly make fun of themselves? Basically the whole song was like:

?Me geezed up riddin? my escalade, cant be late, got bitchaz everywherez?, chilling my million dolla? cribz?, my golden rimz?, Twenty Fourths? nothing else will do, bitchez? on my neckz?, my escalade with those 24?th, bum bum, bling bling, sunshinez escalade, bling bling, golden homiez?, we do it up here?z, christale drinkin? honeyz, escalade honeyz? getting late, got a wheelz? which goes ?peep peep?, spinning golden dimondz, playz playez everyhwre, me chillin? with my golden chicz, on top of my escalade, chillin? my shoryz? homeboyz?, bitches on top of my escaladez???

and basically the whole song was about his bitches, escalade (don?t rappers know other cars exist exept Escalade and Bentley?) and drinking chrystale in his million dollar house? and the dude was so friggin ugly, and the whole video just showed 4 ugly clicks, and an escalade with 24? golden rims? I mean before raps had some content, but now its basically posing and commercial bull$hit?

Now here is my theory:

Rap, and pop will go through this phase, maybe a few more years and then this will stop. This will basically be like the 80?s for metal bands?. Everyone who looks at it today just laughs and all the 80?s crap bands (Poison, Cinderella, White Snake, even Motley Crue, etc) are afraid to show their face on the street. People are getting tired of all of this already, but ya know all the 12 year old girls gotta have their little boy bands. Care to share your thoughts?

you don't see real rap on MTV anymore save for Jurrasic 5 and that was just with one song

please don't base your opinion on rap from what you see on MTV

It drives me nuts that MTV2 turned from a sweet rock channel to a stupid sucky Rap/R&B channel when we already have MTV Jams, another digital cable channel that plays that crap all the time.... so basically they play rock way late at night sometimes...GRR

In my area Comcast switched MTV X (MTV's rock video channel) for MTV Rap/R&B, now I can watch the same videos on 3 different flavors of mtv (MTV, MTV2, MTV R&B). All I want to see is an occational NIN video....is that too much to ask?

And if your friends jump in, "Ohhh gurrlll", they'll be mo' dead
Causin' confusion, Disturbin Tha Peace
Since not into lution', we run in the streets
So bye-bye to all you groupies and golddiggers
Is there a bumper on your ass? NO awesome dude!

I'm doin' a hundred on the highway
So if you do the speed limit, get the Fsck outta my way
I'm D.U.I., hardly ever caught sober
and you about to get ran the Fsck over

B!TCH! Watch out, watch out, watch out
B!TCH! Watch out, watch out, watch out, move

I already laugh at it, and in a few years theyre going to be so rich that they don't have to leave their multi billion dollar mansions and Escalades....

MTV has been overrun by teenie-boppers, all they play is boy and girl bands. No good music rides their waves.

Everything goes in cycles, and we'll look back on much of the mid 90's to early 00's as not a good time in music. People that experienced disco would tell you the late 70's sucked, and I can tell you that a lot of mainstream music in the mid 80's to 1990 pretty much sucked ass too.

Music has become more and more corporate, there's been a lot of consolidation and mergers so that now there are five major labels -- mega corporations that are driven purely by quarterly profits. The patience for artist development is not there, it's much easier to rip off a formula than to discover and nurture artists who may not have many album sales for a while but are doing creative things that can lead music in new directions. So those artists don't get any promotion on MTV and Clear Channel radio, which whores itself to the major labels. It's much easier to clone Britney or Backstreet or JayZ and put the advertising and promotional juggernaut behind them, because those formulas have been proven to work and sell to an audience of young teenagers that has a LOT more spending power than it did just 10-20 yrs ago and unfortunately don't seem to have a clue what good music is. In the process, they've really squeezed most of the alternatives to that completely off major TV and radio.

Most of the rap videos I see on MTV are almost parodies, and they're meaningless to me. They've come full circle, and are now making music and videos that celebrate their rich and famous lifestyles, so that they can continue to be rich and famous. Just get your music from the internet.

I dont watch MTV... i flip it once in a while to see whats goin on. But i am not just talking about MTV, i am talking about everything else, all Media... If 10 years ago we had and Aerosmith and Nirvana rulling the waves, now its Bling Bling Pimp Playa. I have no no problem with any music, but there must be some sort of a content or something.... This goes for all new rock bands as well; Papa roach, Korn, Kid rock, Creed, Limp Biskit or whetever, all of that sh1t is just that.

Teenie Bopper [teeNee BohopPER] noun - 1.) Stupid person that listens to emo punk and enjoys school and "hangs out" with friends of his/her same species. They find no depth in their life, only the frivolous, mundane routine that accompanies them will they find. Fun is all they crave and no true knowledge, this is all that imbues their weak and pathetic souls. 2.) Stupid person that "hangs out" at a movie theatre with their same species to fulfill their empty life.

Agreed but teenie boppers don't want to hear about misery or depression or anything other than their trivial, shallow lives like Blink 182 or whatever else. No teenie bopper will ever understand life or emotional pain. Sorry for rambling, I just hate teenie boppers.

I dont agreed about not having good music in the 90's... It might not be the 60's and 70's with Zeppelin, Hendrix, Aerosmith, Stones, Beatles, etc.. but there was a lot of great stuff in early late 80's / early 90's. some examples:

Guns and Roses (which became huge, a real supergroup without ever even being commercial)
Nirvana (again, Pearl Jam and everyone else tried copying their formula)
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Radiohead
Cranberries (not legends, but still not bad)
Red Hot Chili Peppers (as original as it gets)
REM
Sonic Youth
The Wallflowers

Not to mension a lot of new stuff from Eric Clapton, BB king, even a new Stones album, new Aerosmith albums (not as good as old, but not too bad)

No, none of that sucks. I was thinking more along the lines of Paula Abdul, Milli Vanilli, Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer, the stuff that was dominating the sales charts up until fall 1991.

Well... just look at where they ended up:

Milli Vanilli - I think he works at some Kiddie park
Vanilla Ice - Had his ass kicked by some girl on Celebrity deathmatch
MC Hammer - selling his 24 carat golden sinks on MAD TV
Paula Abdul - Is a host on Teen Idol... how low is that

I think R.E.M. missed their chance to become a current popculture(anti-popculture, same damn thing) juggernaut like Radiohead because of poor editing on New Adventures in Hi-Fi. If they hadn't drowned out Stipe's voice on every track, it would've been a winner.

The difference between current MTV crap and old MTV crap was that you were young in those days and liked the MTV crap, just like the youngsters today like the current MTV crap.

P.S. Anyone producing Rap, Hiphop, Soul, R&B or Jazz should get the death penalty by stoning.

What's new? MTV has been sucking for years now. Longer commercials, more non-music related shows, more of the same music videos, and less substance. I hate this crap as much as the next guy, but damn...at least they could show the entire video on TRL? It is like a 1 minute clip and then its over.

I actually used to enjoy MTV2, but it has turned into 24/7 pop videos and they totally destroyed MTV X. Sure I had to sit through Limp Bizkit and Papa Roach to get a chance to see Ministry, Nirvana, old Korn, NIN or anything else with substance, but at least they showed it. Now you're lucky to see a video with a guitar and no CG.

BTW, to anyone that is itching to see NIN videos, go buy Closure for all the videos prior to The Fragile. Plus, they're all over the net...easy to download a high quality version.

I have to say though, even good ol' Trent is losing his l33tness. Tomb Raider soundtrack? WTF was that? The Fragility DVD was less than I expected as well. :/ From the hype he generated in his interviews I expected to actually feel like I was at the show and I also expected some behind the scenes footage like Closure. It definately didn't compare to the live show though :/
