eat a lot of Vitamin C, drink plenty of milk. it will boost your defense

I take Anacin3 (Aspirin+Caffeine) It usually helps.
Also, try to get your daily value of vitamins.

BTW, when you start feeling sick, you have already been sick for half a week at least. Your symptoms are merely reactions your body is taking against the bugs.

Drink a shot or two of some strong and thick alcohol. Maybe Jagrmeister would do the trick b/c it's cold plus it coats. And even if it doesn't coat for too long, pretty soon you'll be drunk and won't care if your sick anyway, and either have a fun time or fall asleep right away.

You can alleviate it somewhat, though. I use hall's cough drops w/ eucalyptus. They keep the throat kind of "oily" so that it doesn't feel like scorched sandpaper.

Thanks, I'll pick some of those up... it's just frustrating everytime I try to swallow and it hurts.
