Bumping this because I was banned when you posted it.

Amazing, OP!

One thing I was thinking when you posted this--I hope next year you are able to add some spotlights to the roof that can blast straight up in the air....and motorize and choreograph those things to the rest of the show. Would the FAA get involved?
I would love to do that, but it is cost prohibitive. Lights that can actually be seen as beams cost about $8k each for a complete setup, on top of the fact that I'd need a couple higher voltage circuits added to my house. They have to be extremely, extremely bright to not get washed out by the street light that shines down on my house.

I've been researching cheaper alternatives. The only thing I can come up with is $500 per light and a fog machine, but I fear the fog machine would cause issues with my neighborhood, so that's out.

We do have a couple enhancements in mind for next year, but nothing too dramatically different. We're mainly going to focus on having more music and a Halloween show.

You need fog cannons. And drones with leds.
I would love to. But that's really expensive! Get me some kind of corporate sponsor and we'll talk. LOL Intel - are you reading these forums?

What type of led's are you using? Those 5050 smd led strips from ebay will do?
The house outline is done with 3-channel 5050 SMD diodes, similar to the ones you'd get on eBay, except mine are driven by WS2811 ICs. You can buy strips just like this at various places, such as AdaFruit, but I had mine custom manufactured to my spec in China. When you're buying over 2000 lights, you can do this.

Interesting, what was involved in getting stuff custom made? I always thought it would be cool to have outdoor Christmas light strands that use those WS2811 driven LED modules. I'd put them in the outside trees in a very long continuous strand and keep them there permanently. Idealy they'd run on 12v instead of 5 to be able to support extra length. Imagine the cool stuff one could do with that many addressable bulbs in a tree.

Not much, really. Just contact a bunch of light manufacturers on Alibaba until one of them will do what you want. Talk to them in simple, plain English that is easy to stick through an automated translator. Spanish is my first language, so what I did was test my "simple English" by using Google to translate it to Spanish, making sure it made sense, then translated it back to English from the generated Spanish. If that made sense, I translated to/from Mandarin. If that also made sense, I sent the original English message. This method seemed to work for me.

12v circuits are definitely easier to work with than 5v, but the power supplies are horrifically inefficient and the overall cost of the lights is higher. There are a lot of people who argue one over the other. I actually use both, depending on the situation. Use the right tool for the right job kind of thing; no reason to limit yourself artificially.

lol this is great.

Spotlights in the sky are bad for light pollution.

Dry ice or use pierzo heads intended for humidifiers. Add cylindrical trashcan and a membrane and voila.

The drones will be tricky. Diy route is not hard either since you can buy contoller boards and just add frame. I am not talking about shining a torch from the sky, but rather simulate turbo laser. One of those panel led fired downwards flying in a descent approach kind of setup.

hehe--great idea: send your video to Intel marketing department and ask them if they'd like to see a "Built by Intel" stamp in the corner, and a 15 second ad.

Star Wars-themed drone dogfights over OP's lawn? HOLY CRAP!

OP: Intel will pay for this

If you're so sure, help me out! Send it in. Pull strings. Bribe people. Whatever it takes! This stuff is very time consuming; I'll take whatever help I can get.

Hey man, there are Intel-marketing stooges that post all over CPU and VC&G forums. Let's just contact them!

(ask me how I "know"... )

Bumping this year old thread. Why? Because we’ve done it again this year. We did the original Star Wars trilogy with almost twice as many lights and new cool special effects, including R2D2’s hologram of Princess Leia. We’ve had so much traffic in the neighborhood, I feel bad for my neighbors.

If you’re in the Tampa, FL area, PM me and I’ll send you my address.

If you're going to bump this and talk about all the changes you've made, you dang well had better post pictures/videos.

A while back, someone posted a rant about how LED Christmas lights should run on DC power so that they don't flicker. Well, mine run on DC, but they're still a little bit more complicated than that.

This is our first time doing this. Looking forward to next year!

Enjoy!
Wow! Such choreography! I hope the neighbors appreciate it.

Here is another old one- nice frosty version

Yep, that’s also my house from last year.

I’ll post a pic of what it looks like now, but we’re not posting videos until it’s already taken down. This is so that people actually come and see it (video doesn’t do it justice), plus it lets us make tweaks before a final shot.

Sneak peek pic for this year’s lights...

Video coming in about a week. No guarantees...

Would it be possible to get pics of the lights during the daytime, this request can obviously wait until after the season or whatever. And I agree with Highland, a private showing for your good buddies would be the proper thing to do imo
