My Two Problems w/ Vista

Ok. So I've recently setup vista ultimate 32bit. I have two problems.

#1) My external hard drive supports eSata. On windows XP I could turn my hard drive on after booting and it would detect it and work fine. On vista, I need to go to device manager and select "Scan for hardware changes." After that, it detects it and works fine.

#2) My shutdown time is ridiculous. After I shut down I basically just lock up and sit there for like a minute or two and stare. I'm guessing I have an application that doesn't want to close or something, but its really bothering me.

I'm using:

Gmail Notifier
RoboForm (Password App)
AIM (Newest Version)
ZoneAlarm (Vista Version)
Logitech Set Point (Mouse Settings)
BestCrypt
BOClean

My system:

Opteron 165
DFI Ultra-D Motherboard
2xG.Skill Extreme
2xRaptor 150GB (Raid 0)
eVGA 7950 GT

Its water cooled. It is currently (and has been since installation of vista) running at stock settings. All software installed including vista is legal and legit. Been up and running for only 2 days now.

Sounds like a driver issue with the eSATA drive. Vista could detect and hotswap my eSATA drive just fine when it's running in AHCI mode.

AHCI Mode? What do you suppose I do....

I dont see a driver for it... I mean its basically just a sata cable.

There's a driver for the SATA controller. If that (and the hardware) don't support Hot-Swap (which many motherboard SATA controllers don't), then you won't be able to hot-swap.

If you want to fix the problem, consider a hot-swap-rated PCI or PCI-E controller card. They aren't expensive. I KNOW the Silicon Image controller chips support hot-swap, since I use them on all my new SBS 2003 Servers for backups. I ASSUME there are Vista drivers for them, although I haven't really looked yet.

Definately supports it because it worked fine in XP. I'm just using my motherboard here with an external hard drive. There a little thing that takes up a PCI slot and connects to a SATA port. I don't see any vista (or XP) drivers for that matter for eSata.

My Vista Business box runs continuosly. I rarely do a cold boot. When I do a warm boot the shutdown doesn't seem to take that long. The only "extra" software I run is McAfee 8.5.0i.
