I couldn't live like that knowing the people around me are living in shanties or on the street. To each his own I guess...

We came from nothing and didn't forget it. My grandma always give food/clothing/ money/stuff away. I gave away more money than I actually spend during my vacation.

That's how much my grandmom pay forthe assistant. She cook, clean, and run arrands for $100 month

Does she live with your grandma and works 24/7?

The relative of mine living in VN, his 3 servants do not live with him. They live at home, and come when needed. They clean the appartment, run arrands, get the groceries, and cook. They work 7 days a week to.

lol Slave. His grandma might have a slave, but my relative in VN has a servant.

if that makes you feel better. It's worse than sweatshop labor but it's ok since they get to have a few bucks to feed their families, right?

Communism sure has ruined the place.

You ought to see how most people live, and then see how members of the Party live. Some people are really rich, that's for sure. Communism has put Vietnam decades behind, economically speaking, compare with S. Korea. Now the Party has realized it has failed miserably, so it's letting people doing business instead of controlling everything.

Does Vietnam make cars? If not that tax is stupid. If so I understand it. Protect your domestic industry first. Nice pics BTW.

Funny, I was in VN during the Lunar New year too.
This year, I went to Beijing for 2 weeks and came to VN for 4 weeks.
Being a Vietnamese American and living in the US since 1978, I first went back to VN in 2008 and that really openned my eyes.
I had such a great time that I went back last year for 2 months.
This time around, I was there for the Lunar New Year and I had a fantastic time.
Had a Viet friend from Australia that is working there and we went out and partied almost every night.
When you are a Viet Kieu(foreign Vietnamese), you are instantly looked at differently as they all think you have money.
Being Viet Kieu, the girls just flock to you(probably for the wrong reason, but never the less)
I have tons of pictures of everywhere in VN as I've done pretty much all the tours of VN.
Its an awesome country to visit and cheap.

Its definately not the norm for the OP.
They are very very well off.
If you have a car, you are status, especially a BMW.
Most people make do make $100/month.
Thats why business owners make so much money over there.
Labor cost is practically nothing.

If you guys don't know, the tradition of Lunar New Year is giving out money in red envelopes.
Being a foreigner just mean you gonna have to give out alot of money while you're there.
Yeah, I spent alot of money this time around but I had such a fantastic time.

It's a Chinese thing. Vietnam has a long history with China, sometimes friendly, sometimes not so friendly. Before a Portuguese priest introduced the alphabets to the Vietnamese, Vietnamese characters were similar to Chinese characters.

Nice pics OP. As a matter of fact, I just came back from VN recently and will post some pics shortly.

What district your family is in? Mine is in Dist 1/Binh Thanh area.

There are extreme wealthy and extreme poverty in VN. It is sad that some people are so rich due to commie connections/corruptions/kickbacks/illegal means and not to hard work or innovations.
