My video Card problem

It all started oh about 4 months ago when I bought and built my own computer from Newegg.com. The two primary parts for my problem are:
Aopen AK89- Max, with a AMD 64 3000+
BFG 5700 Ultra (purchased at Bestbuy last December)

What happened was when I went into Video Intensive programs; ie Games, the basis of my computer life; the game would freeze and about 2-3 minutes later a blue screen would come up saying in essence, "There is an error in: nv4_disp.dll" (this file is the nvidia Drivers file)

At first I did a number of things, including new drivers and changing video settings and still no fix. I called Aopen Tech support and they told us that it was the video card company, not them. Here is when I first called BFG Tech support (very good and fast), they did something, I am unsure what, the fixed my computer.

However about the begining of this month the error came back, at first I thought it was just a "hiccup" of the system, so I let it slide. Then next week it happened again, and slowly it got worse and worse to the point that it crashed in the first 1-5 minutes of gameplay. So I call BFG once more this time I get a RMA, which came very fast, I might add. Still no fix, I call them again and get a 2nd RMA (after mailing back the first). Once more it doesn't work, so my dad suggests we take it out and switch cards with his system, a XP 2500+ system. His video card is an old Geforce 2 MX 32 MB. First my card works flawless in his system. Then I plug his card into my new one, and guess what the old card works flawlessly. We call BFG once more and they told us to send back one RMA and try some wierd thing, which did nothing.

It appears that my card is totally incompatitable, with my motherboard. Now, me and my dad are going to probably get a new motherboard, as that will probably be cheaper to replace tham the video card.

Does anyone else have a better idea for what to do?

Also, power is not a problem, I have 350 Watts and my dad only has 250 watts in his system, so it wouldn't work in my dads if it was power.

Ummm... check the BIOS settings before you go to far. Make sure your Apperature settings are at 256MB probably turn FastWrite off those kinda things. Also, try setting your AGP speed to 4x instead of 8x - no, there will NOT be a performance difference, but it may fix your problem...

the thing is most of that stuff is already set or is done automatically by the motherboard. THe Tech guy went through my bios and my settings are fine.

Well, if you buy another motherboard, buy a better (i.e. more expensive) one. I've never used an Aopen mobo, but if they work (or rather, don't) like their other products, they should be avoided. I recommend an Abit motherboard.

Just for humor sake though, try setting the AGP to 4x, that could make a big difference... if not, get a new board...

One other thing before you go out any buy another board.

Make sure your video card is not sharing an IRQ with another device, i.e., your sound card or even a NIC. I got this from a support e-mail from a vid card problem I had...

From Start button, go to Control Panel
Control Panel go to System Icon ( make sure that you are viewing the Control Panel in the Classic View.
From the System Properties, go to the Hardware Tab.
From the Hardware Tab click on the Device Manager button.
Inside of the Device Manager, on the Toolbar, click on View.
Then Resources by Type.
Double click on Interrupt Request (IRQ).
In this list look for the Nvidia Graphic Card that you just install.
To the left side of the Visiontek product, you will find a PCI number, that is you IRQ. (AGP cards are also PCI)
Check what other or others are in the same IRQ.
If you are sharing you VisionTek video card with another PCI device that is on your PCI slot, like a Modem, Audio, or Firewire. You can try to Move them to another PCI slot and see if this will re address the IRQ for you.

Send me the c:\windows\minidump\memory.dmp file (latest few should suffice) and the MPS Reports, and work thru the listed steps - read how to's here:

Oh..and check the power supply. Sometimes wattages can be deceiving. Older 300W (back when 300 watts was mostly for servers and stuff) tend to put out a lot of current on the 12V line because they expect you to use it to run like 5 or 6 drives. They tend to put out alot less on the 3.3 and 5V lines, which is mostly what the motherboard and video card will use, because back in the Pentium II days video cards only used a couple of watts max. Some of the new 250 or 275 watt power supplies put out a decent amount of current on the 3.3 and 5V lines because they need to be able to run AthlonXP boards and 50+ watt video cards, but only have enough on the 12V for 2 drives or so. Since wattage is only the aggregate output, it's sometimes deceiving.
