Hello all.

I've just made the switch the Vista Ultimate 64 just this past weekend. I switched for the extended memory support and to finally game with DX-10. I was some-what reluctant to leave XP MCE 2005 since it was very good to me and due to the fact that I knew it so well.

It only took a little time with Vista 64 to forget all about XP! Ultimate is so slick, so stable and so fast. And I simply can't get over how beautiful the UI looks! DreamScene is a wonderful feature...and it's just a freakin' desktop! I like how optimized versions of everyday programs like Explorer have a shine and polish to them as well. The real issue I think most users have when they switch is the "layout" of things. But once you learn where and how to look for things and start customizing Vista for how you want it to look and work....XP isn't even playing the same game!

Stability has been top notch. I had some minor issues at first, but it was due to my o/c'ing my rig, not with Vista. No problems finding drivers, no problems installing applications or games. Everything works, everything runs. It's also super secure; if you find it too insrusive, you can ease it back as much as you need to.

It is a BIG OS, though. It likes a lot of resources as well. It's unfortunate that most people simply don't have the kind of rig that will be able to run Ultimate x64 effectively. However, if your rig has the stones, Ultimate 64 is the way to go!

...I'm all about Windows 7 now.

Edit: Vista x64 did rock while it lasted though.

Whats the point of using Windows 7 now when you just have to keep reformatting and reinstalling a new version of Windows 7 until the final version is out? Doesn't that get frustrating after a while?

Wait for Windows 8 that'll rock 7 .

My personal experience with Vista x64 is its a very fine OS,solid and no real issues.

Actually, most people don't upgrade operating systems on existing computers. They upgrade when buying a new computer and even today's low end will run Ultimate just fine. So it really doesn't matter if a person now owns a rig that can effectively run Ultimate x64 or not.

Sometimes, us enthusiast and geeks need to step back and realize we are the exception, not the norm.

I have been running Vista x64 for 12 months. I ran x86 before that since May of 07. I just installed another pair of 2GB memory modules lastnight which brings me up to 8GB total.

After about 10 mins Vista managed to cache 5.65GB worth of data in that memory leaving 1.5GB free. Everything is near instant which is very very nice.

And if people arent following the hot deals section. There is 2x2GB memory on sale for 40 bucks before a 20 dollar MIR. 8GB for 40 bucks. COME GET SOME!

Using it since launch and its the best windows I've ever used (granted, I skipped windows 1.0, only briefly "tested" windows 2.0 and never touched winME). However, after shelling out so much money for my ultimate copy back then (rip-off because MS never really kept their Ultimate Extras promise) I'm unlikely to buy Windows 7 for its cosmetic improvements. Its not going to bring as many under-the-hood changes to the table as vista did over XP.

I have installed various vista flavors on:

ECS 755A2-3200+/X800XL (longhorn and beta and RC)
Foxconn 939/4000+/7950GT
Asus A8N SLI/4200/X1900XT
MSI G33/7950GT (and IGP)
Gigabyte GAm61PS3/8800GT-9600GT
Gigabyte G33 and G31 boards (4 of those systems now for some folks) with various GPU's

Very few issues. Most none, The issues I did have were easily fixed. Last week a build with the 750i FTW and a Zotac 9600GT and it went smooth besides video corruption but updated bios and it was fine.
