I watched the ops video again.

Um has it ever occured to those people to BOIL their water?

I mean seriously. Boiling the water would remove parasites before drinking!

It is not 100% effective just by amateur sanitation techniques. Some organisms have defensive mechanisms that shelter them against harsh conditions, others can withstand UV-A/B DNA alteration up to a point. Think about it, the sun may be always on the water a good portion of the day, yet why isn't it killing them?

For some examples, see endospores from prokaryotes or (oo)cyst forms from protists.

Endospores are one of the reasons why tuberculosis is hard to kill once in your system, although technically this is not classified as a parasite.

Reading that article and seeing how they actually get rid of the things...that sounds really painful and torturous.

I can see how it would play out:

African man 1 "Hey AM2, shouldnt you boil that water before you drink it?"
African man 2 "No AM1, gardensensei said its not 100% effective"
African man 1 "oh ok, lets drink the muddy water straight then!"

Fail.

Because sunlight loses intensity or is dispersed as it passes through water. If the organisms were somehow trapped in the upper few inches of water, much more of them would be killed or rendered impotent through DNA mutation, but water currents or their own motility can move them around.

Mycobacterium doesn't form vegetative endospores. Its the unique thick waxy layer/coating comprising the outer cell membrane that makes tuberculosis difficult to stamp out.

lack of fuel in a lot of instances. A person wandering may not have the means to create fire and boil water much of the time.

I doubt they even have the means to do so. Guess they could make a fire, but do they even have metal pots there? These people pretty much live off nothing.

Guinea worm is pretty tame as far as horrid parasitic diseases go. Look through through the infectious and parasitic disease section of a medical text some time.

Or maybe I won't.

The parasite can also emerge from other areas of the body: arms, head, chest and even the eyes.

Excruciating hell-worms that crawl out of your eyes is enough mental imagery for me right now.
