My WD hard drive died!!!

So, ever since I installed my WD hard drive, it clicked. And then, it finally died. Well, at least, it doesn't work well. My question is, should I bother to even use it as a back up or just toss it? It's relatively new, do you think WD would honor their guarantee, or will they give me a lot of crap about it? BAsically, I'm asking...... what would YOU do???

BTW, does anyone know how to set-up the pins on the drive to make it a slave drive?

thanks d00ds

Look up your drive on WDs site. If it is still under warranty they will replace it . No problems.

That would be an RMA asshat. Some online vendors and others require that the drive be sent to the drive maker after a certain amount of time. There is no difference between RMAing it to WD or Newegg(example). You send them a drive and they send you one back. WD also cross ships.

buy new send in RMA style, kinda like a rebate, just a waiting game. Chances are you will maybe get a newer model.

WOW, people are getting lazy these days. Hard drive RMA's are SIMPLE!! Run the diag, get the failure code...call or email the company. Then, a new drive shows up on your door, you put the dead one in the box and call UPS to come get it pre-paid!! You don't even have to leave the house!

HAHA!! WOOO, another RMA convert!!!

Remember, if you don't RMA things, they win. It's their incentive to make good products.

i just RMA'd online my dead MAxtor. there isn't a code because neither of computers ill recognize the drive and when i run teh Maxtor software, it doesn't even read the hard drive. I had them ship me the drive first and ill just use their boxes to send back. easy.

Welcome to the WD club... I didn't RMA mine in hopes that someday I'll spend the $ on a pro that can get my precious data back.

WD doesn't really care about what's on the HD. I think they toss most of them, if not all of them.

Just a quick comment. I have RMA'd every brand but Seagate (never had one fail!!!). Never had any problems with any vendor (IBM, WD, Maxtor, Samsung) on an RMA, and, as was already stated, you don't even need to leave the house. That's why you have a warranty!

This is what I decided on a couple years too. Even if it was SCSI because, you have to figure, the only reason I'd have SCSI is for some high demanding business use in which case I don't want people finding out business information heh.

Buy smaller, but good quality IDE drives for your rig and save the large, expensive ones for your file server to only hold divx and mp3 ONLY sort of junk that you don't care if anyone finds (then return those if break).

Actually they fix them, and eventually give them back to consumers as rma replacements. Plus they put a REFURBISHED sticker on the drive, no you cant take it off its part of the main sticker with all the info of the drive :disgust:

If you low level format the drive, it's not likely someone will go to the trouble of recovering the data since it would probably cost them a lot of money.
