First off, it's great to to be back home!

You know... what brought me to AT in the first place was my hardcore geeking out on computer hardware. I built my first (and subsequently second, third, fourth etc. etc...) computer with y'all! And guess what's bringing me back? That's right! I got that itch again!

Speaking of itches, want to know what helped keep me away from here for so long? I contracted a pretty nasty 3-letter VD...OSX /rimshot?

So, yeah...tell me what you guys think of my build! I placed the order last night.

Things I'll be using it for: (CSCI Major) Software development, VMs galore, and moderate gaming.

1 x ($129.99) CASE ANTEC|P183 BK RT
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129061

As for my video card: I thought I researched this enough, but I ended up having a bit of a panic after ordering this:

1 x ($159.99) VGA ASUS EAH5770 CUCORE/2DI/1GD5
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121363

Because I've read several times that it over heats so I went back and ordered this card as well and return the CuCore when it arrives:

1 x ($179.99) VGA MSI|R5770 HAWK 1G RT $179.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127490

Thoughts?

Overall, I think it looks good!

I wouldn't have bothered with the SATA 3 mechanical drive, it won't saturate SATA 2. Saved a couple bucks.

PSU is overkill by about 400W. A 550W would give you expansion room, 650W if you thought about X-fire at some point. Not a big deal, just means it will run a little inefficiently, and cost an extra $20-30.

I think 5770 is probably a safe bet for you, but sorry, I don't anything when it comes to specific brands on them.

All I can say is nice PSU/Case. I really wanted a CP-850w when I had the chance to get one for like 98$ shipped, but I either had to get a new case or do the custom CRT-TV case mod I've been putting off. I suppose I'll get around to it at some point.

As for 5770s, if you're not going to OC them, focus on warranty. If you are going to OC, the HAWK is probably a good bet since it was made for it.

I guess I failed to mention that I built this with "noise" playing a role in my decisions. Not the key role, as if that's the case I would have went with the 65W X4 that I was so close to buying a week ago...I literally almost bought my system without doing any recent research. I came to AT and was blown away that a 6 core AMD chip was coming out!

Anyways, apparently that PSU is incredibly silent and efficient according to this review:

It is very possible I'll end up getting sucked back into gaming/building so there's room for me to play later on, too

Thank you, though!

Can either of you two elaborate more on this drive? Why is this better then WD drive?

I've never had problems with WD drives, but I'll admit that F3 doesn't look like a bad drive at all. For $90 and free shipping I'd be willing to give it a try.

Not to be offensive but for that price 178 for a 5770 u can buy a new 4890 1gb wich will crush the 5770 hands down.

Just a thought though. As i went for my 4890 vaporx 1gb cuz it was 40 euros cheaper then a 5770 1gb. And performance wise its a hell lot stronger then a 5770.

But other then that the 5770 is a good card but i think performance/price wise its a bit to expensive.
It only adds dx11 but other then that no extra cons and a 4890 sits in between a 5850 and gtx 285 in performance.

Just a thought if i would be u i would consider looking for a cheap 4890 if u arent as lucky as me in finding one then it wouldnt matter. But just a thought from my side. As u can find vry good deals on these cards on the net.

Thank you, you bring up some very valid points.

I did indeed consider the 4890. Well, at least until the point that I came across Anandtech's review of the 5770 cards...

http://anandtech.com/show/2856/13

Apparently it's one of the loudest, hottest, most power hungry card in this price range!

This is definitely one of the areas that I wanted to steer towards "quiet"!

Good point about the power of the card, though. Apparently, it stomps the 5770!

Personally if you are going to be running VMs galore (especially since you're in a Computer Science major, I'd highly recommend 8GBs of RAM, if you can afford it. It's quite nice when you're running multiple VMs and doing other things at once...I know I tend to watch TV while my VMs are installing/updating/running any intensive tasks, and the extra RAM helps a lot.

Just a thought...

You know, I don't know why I didn't just order that. I guess I didn't like seeing the price increase so much, in the shopping cart. You're most definitely right. I'll ask newegg to send another set when I send back the extra video card!
