"No, I tried to look passed your BIG weight issue"

That's the unnecessarily rude part. All that was needed to be said is that you paid for a session with a specific trainer, and if you couldn't get that then you wanted a refund.

You were definitely a little more forward than I'd expect the average person to be, but I can't argue with it. I'd probably have finished the session and never went back, or requested someone else privately. At the very least you need to be able to operate the machines. I'd be super annoyed by an obese person trying to show me around.

That being said, for me, we have this thing called the internet these days so I'd never pay for a trainer unless you have some very specific/special issues. You can google 'upper body routine' and you'll have results that are as good as any GED educated sports club trainer will give you.

You probably got everything right except the last sentence. I never asked if I was rude, I asked what you would have done.

I would have spoken to the staff member and discussed expectation upon introduction. What the "plan would be".
Lets say I skipped that step and went straight to the gym floor like you did, instead of focusing on her appearance and performance, I would have focused on what a trainer is supposed to do. Train. I don't care what she could do or whatshe looks like. I want to know how to use the equipment and how it fits in my overall plan as described by the trainer.

Was any of this covered in your session or did you just throw a fit because some fat girl was using the machine on the first plate?

If after the first 10 minute I decide to end the session. I would have first explained to the "trainer" that its not working out.
If at that point she brings up the whale tale, then I'd respond with a simple, "I made my appointment with whathisname and I'd like to address this with the desk jock\manager guy". I could also responded with "You are not who I made my appointment with...."

The weight thing was not relevant. It's not important. It's a distraction.
If she was hot 20 something who runs marathons and bounces quarters off her tits....chances are she would have trouble with the machines you would probably want to see too. Chances are that trainer would have shat a shart trying to work half the machines on anything other than 10lb plate.

Lets talk about the weight thing for bit more.
If it was a 5'2 300lb competition bodybuilder who could rack the entire machine, he could have still been a shit trainer. On the other side of the coin, a seemingly out of shape blob who could only move a couple of plates could be an excellent trainer.

One thing that does stick out is $35 for a personal trainer session?
Was it a new member discount or something? That's super cheap and for the first session, they usually do just do walkaround with the equipment and keep everything on the lowest setting. That first day should be more about discussion than actually using the machines.

I wouldn't even put anyone on a machine right off the bat for the first session.

Some guy who let himself go joins a gym.
Intent is to work on gut, weak ass back and "upper body".
Bases personal trainer decision on who the wife wants to bang.

Dude apparently will pay anyone to hold his hand around the gym so allows desk jockey to select anyone in the list of "Who is working today".

Gym staff member begins to show the guy around the gym.
Out of shape guy who doesn't know how to use gym equipment judges some staff member based on appearance and the amount of weight she can lift.

Out of shape guy acts like an ass and verbally lashes out at gym staff member.

Comes on internet forum to ask if he was rude.

when you put it like that it I realize now this should have been greentext.

im pretty sure she was less than 300!! I don't think you are in the wrong sounds like classic bait switch.

IMO you can buy a new piece of equipment every year that you don't attend a fitness center. I use a smith machine and try to do lighter than my 3 rep max to avoid injuries. Id say most important thing for you is to do a good warm up and focus on lots of reps with maybe a 8 rep 10 rep 12 rep 15 rep 12 rep 10 rep pyramid. I don't understand why they would have trainers that cant operate the machines but possibly that was exaggerated by you as well.

I had to laugh at the OP. I do not think your attitude was wrong. It was the same thing when I went to Hooters a few years back and an eight-month pregnant server was serving me. Sorry, I went to see Hooters and not pregnant women. Even my wife thought that was just wrong. Maybe I should start a competing restaurant called Preggies and have a bunch of non-pregnant women work there.

Weird thing is that you would probably do well.
What kind of food would you serve? I'm picturing a lot of sausages and lot of eggs. Maybe some veal here and there

lol, a little over weight? At 300 lbs.

It seems that she should had been told the truth. So, this is the issue. People are never upfront. They beat around the bush, and they do this because they don't want to hurt anyones feelings. But, what they are doing is they are making it worse. 300 plus is big for a personal trainer. She's representing the gym for christ sakes. The gym can't say anything or else they'll be sued. She can take what you told her, and she'll be better because of it. Or, she'll be devasted and will never recover.

So, you're saying she doesn't know she's fat? That would be mental illness level delusion. The only thing accomplished by pointing it out, is it makes you a dick. Being a dick's fine for internet games, but you're expected to have better behavior in the physical world.

Shirley you jest.

what ever you make it sound like fitness equipment are coat hangers? and they are expensive in my area? because you know how much a year in a fitness center would cost? /shrug to many factors of your joke to figure out and so funny that you didnt want to explain

i have purchased a smith machine with 250 pounds of weight for 325? A double end bag / speed bag / heavy bag for close to nothing. you can have a whole gym setup in your garage or spare bedroom for very little cost, makes working out much more enjoyable then sitting in your car drenched in sweat or showering at the gym. How about if the gym had a laundry service washed your stuff put it back in your locker that might make going to the gym worth something heh.

The majority of Americans use their fitness equipment to hang their clothes on. You are one of the few exceptions, apparently.

There's no point acting like that in a place that you know you're going to frequent. It only has the potential to hurt you in the long run.

I control the expressions on my face,

You might have tried, but I but she noticed the initial reaction before you hid it.

By this time I'm getting pissed.

Which she probably noticed.

I stop the training session and then ask her to follow me back to the front desk. I immediately tell the guy that I want my money refunded for this session,

Stopping the session was fine, but there was no need to drag her over to humiliate her when asking for the refund. You should have simply explained to Chrissie that it wasn't going to work, that you would rather reschedule with Nick, and that you were going to go back to the front desk to request a refund. She might have even offered to take care of it for you.

because I don't need someone who can't do the machines, and only can tell me how they work.

Ding, ding, ding! After dragging her to the front desk, you could have just politely said you had decided you would rather rescheduled with Nick. Instead, you criticized her physical ability in front of a coworker. You might not have been the first to use the word overweight, but you were the first to implicitly discuss her weight.

I then said to Chrissie, "No, I tried to look passed your BIG weight issue, but you can't even operate the machines, and I don't feel confident that you are giving me proper guidance."

I've struck the part here you could have left unsaid, but honestly, this part of the conversation wasn't really all that bad given the circumstances. It was your prior actions and comments (and I suspect your demeanor and facial expressions) that gave rise to the circumstances that were the bigger problem.

The guy behind the front desk said to me, "That was completely uncalled for." I told him to "Just shut up and give me a refund, or set me up an appointment with the original trainer Kyle." I got a refund.

You told a guy who had the courage to stand up for a coworker to shut up. There are grade school bullies that don't sink that low.

You owe Chrissie an apology for the disrespectful manner in which you requested a refund. You also owe an apology to the guy at the counter you told to shut up. And one to your wife for embarrassing her.

You were rude.

You're always going to be "the guy that made Chrissie cry" to everyone who works there so good luck having good time at that gym.

What would I have done? I'd have pointed out that I was expecting a personal trainer to talk me through specific sets of exercises designed to fix my problems but that as he wasn't there they could use this time as a time to just familiarise me with the machines (which it appears they were doing) and maybe they could refund the personal trainer fee.

How do you know they like her? I'd imagine her co-workers all wonder how/why in the hell she works at a gym too. Especially if she sucks at her job on top of being the anti-fitness.

to be honest, I've said this before but political correctness and "smoothing the message" will be the death of this nation.

Quit being fucking pansies and call people out for who they are. You're fat, overweight, and obviously have no in-depth of knowledge of your muscles, body structure, or how to do anything other than raise twinkies to your mouth.

Sorry, but as long as you keep telling people "Oh no! You're beautiful and in shape!" is the more we get this fat acceptance and they continue to eat jugs of ice cream on the couch. It's not a win for the overall human race.

I'm glad you did you what did OP.

You don't have to tell anyone anything, especially when they didn't ask, and didn't make any representations one way or the other. It's a management issue. Picking on girls is easy. Doing it with men could land you in the hospital.
