If you ever want to convince someone they don't want a dog, take them to a dog owner's house just as the snow is melting in the Spring.
I see dog owners taking their dogs out for shit breaks around my apartment, and only a couple of times has the owner had a bag with them to clean up their pet afterward. Usually the lazy, irresponsible moron is standing right next to the goddamn post with a sign saying "Pick up after your pet" and bags for doing so attached to it.

It's pretty awful that you can be so callous about the dog that threw up on your bed. That dog died because of a sickness and it was trying to get your attention. You DEFINITELY shouldn't get a dog if you're too stupid to understand the signs that dog was giving you. Their form of communication isn't any more primitive than a young child, so you obviously don't give a shit if anything happens to a dog, which means you shouldn't have one. Tell your wife how much of an asshole you are and that you'd let a dog die simply because you didn't want to get out of your chair and maybe she'll back off. Spite aside, that's actually good advice considering your situation.

Lock your wife and your dog in the trunk of the car for an hour. Which one do you think will be glad to see you when you open the trunk?

FWIW my wife was anti-dog. More or less the same position as you. We got one anyways and she loves it to death. Seriously I can't see you not falling in love with a dog.

Wow, quite the necro!

Update: My wife bought a $500 older purebred lap dog of some type. I spent two days reworking our fence so it couldn't get out of the back yard, she spent more $100s on toys, food, misc equipment.

After a week realized she was allergic to it and gave it away.

We were together for another 4 years when we came to the realization we were done and I've enjoyed being single for the last 1 1/2 years.

When my fiancee and I started dating I would bring one of my parent's toy poodles over for the weekend She fell in love with this dog and wanted to get one of her own toy poodles as a puppy. Memorial day 2012 we did and we are absolutely in love with our "little one".

That's a sad turn of events. I was expecting you to get the dog, fall in love with it, and then have it die like Marley & Me.

Thought she was a cat person...didn't we have a PM about that a few years ago?

+1 for enjoying your life.

My wife also wants another dog. We've had two over the past twenty-four years. Our two daughters are now in college. Our second dog died a few months ago. I am happy to not have to care for anything now with our empty nest. We can come and go as we please, although we still have a cat. She is adamant about getting another dog but I don't want to. I want a break. We both work full-time and no one is home during the day so would have to pay someone to come in to take the dog out. I don't want to pay someone to do that, to put them in the kennel, to pay the vet bills etc. I've been there and done that. I never wanted a dog in the first place but compromised for many years. My wife will not let this go. What do I do?

Hopefully your wife can find an apartment that allows dogs.
