Wife is okay but here's what happened, she was driving down a street with cars parallel parked on the side. She was just driving the speed limit when a woman driving a Dodge Durango just pulled out and into the side of her car. The Durango hit our car in the right front wheel and fender and scraped the entire right side of our car including the rear wheel. Front suspension is damaged, rear suspension is damaged, both wheels are ruined, both doors need to be replaced as does the right front fender and there is damage to the rear fender and bumper cover. Estimate from the body shop is $27,000. Her car was a 2013 CLS550 with 72,000 miles on it. Designo Diamond white with premium 1 package and AMG sport package. It is not drivable due to the suspension damage and subsequent error messages on the dash. Insurance is settling with us for $30k which I think is fair.

So, she wants a new CLS. She was originally thinking a CPO CLS but there aren't a ton of them on the market and the ones that are either have too many miles on them or odd color combinations we don't want... or both.

We went to our local Mercedes dealership on Saturday and test drove a black 2019 CLS 450 and we both liked it, just not the color. It seems like all the dealerships in our immediate area have white or black but no other colors. Expanding the search to Orange County we find very few selenite greys and a few reds around but not in our immediate area (there are 3 Mercedes dealerships within 30 miles of us and none of them had a silver, dark grey or a red CLS in stock). We didn't care for black interior on the car we drove as we both felt it made the car feel somewhat claustrophobic inside so we decided against selenite grey as they mostly come with dark interiors so we went with red with cream colored interior, black carpets and premium 1 package. It has a few other packages too but without looking at the sheet I couldn't tell you what they are. We were able to get the dealer to knock almost $3k off msrp. They are bringing the car in from another dealership this week.

I'll post pics when it arrives.

Oh, and as we were wrapping up our negotiations I said to the salesman that there was one more thing he needed to do for me. I said, "You need to let me drive one of those AMG GT's you have sitting out front." He laughed and said sure, no problem. We can go now if you want, but I said no due to the rain. I want to drive it in the dry, not when it is raining. So, when we go pick up her car I'll take him up on his offer.

Glad she's ok!

I knew a guy who got creamed by a cop car that did the same thing (pulled out without looking.) Not only was he pretty shook up, but the cops were (predictably) absolutely no help.

+1 glad she's alright.

Too plush for my taste but depending on how bad the suspension is (the entire system is comprised of MANY parts) that would make a great fixer upper project... for someone with much deeper pockets than myself, admittedly. Budget missile car FTW

Not a Mercedes guy myself but damn that is a slick looking car.

My wife has been eye balling those cars herself lately and I have been pinching my butt cheeks thinking about the cost.

The right front wheel was pretty far out of alignment with the left front wheel. It looks like it is pushed to the rear and it is also toed out quite a bit. The left front wheel is pointing straight ahead compared to where the right front wheel is pointing in this pic.

They're really nice cars. We loved our old one and took it on many road trips. Very comfortable ride and very luxurious.

This isn't an AWD car is it? If so, replacing CV axles in hubs would probably be in order but so long the frame isn't tweaked (and it shouldn't be) it's basically steering and suspension parts. Don't get me wrong that's quite a bit of effort on top of the body work and I don't doubt the insurance's quote but that's a shame to give up those expensive AMG bits. It's salvageable with time and money but it's not practical either; you're much better off replacing it.

No, it wasn’t AWD but I’m not up for fixing all that damage myself. Those airmatic struts are expensive as hell, as are all MB parts plus we had error messages on the display. And painting that color, Designo Diamond White would have been expensive too.

Thanks. My wife picked up the new CLS on Monday so I still haven’t driven the AMG GT yet. This weekend isn’t looking good either so probably next weekend.

I’ll post my review though for sure.

That sucks. Should've tried to get the AMG GT 4, although the CLS looks as good (I think I prefer the headlights on the AMG, they're not bad on the CLS but they don't quite fit they're a bit too sharp and angular compared to the rest of the design). But then pricing I'm sure would be bonkers and not worth it.

I haven’t even seen one yet plus they’re going to be quite a bit more expensive too. This is the most expensive car we’ve ever purchased quite frankly.

Herm we cannot be friends, I'll take his gt3 please.

@OP sorry about your wife. If you can't handle driving in the rain why do you want to drive amg?

Rain, shmain. I'm sure they put good new tires on it. It has traction control.

I like manual transmission and traction control that has on off switch.

I’d just prefer to drive it on a clear day is all. What’s wrong with that?

I ride my motorcycle in the rain, just prefer not to.

Glad she's ok. Nice car, and get a dash cam. I seriously wish all cars would come with a built in dash cam (modular setup - should be able to remove the camera and also replace SD card), so I wouldn't have to fumble with wires and everything. I know it's an option on some GM cars

Mercedes re very nice to ride in and to drive. That new one you are buying looks great (nice color) But Mercedes is very costly to buy & insure and when they break down, be prepared for big repair bills.

The only downside of a dashcam is it only captures what is in front. Sometimes I consider installing one looking backwards.

And a $30 cam is going to suck. I have a couple different $100 cams that are highly rated and the pq is acceptable even at 1080p.

She picked it up last Monday. It actually cost less to insure than her old CLS.

As for repairs, it is brand new. We have the factory warranty for a few years at least and we’re used to the maintenance cost as we both own Mercedes vehicles. I have an E550 Coupe, which is out of warranty. It has been pretty good though.

Many of them have front and back cameras now. more wires to run though.
