Waste? it's chump change. I never turn off any of my computers unless I'm working on it. No point to do so. We do use sleep mode which kicks on after a time but never ever a full shut down. I advise my grandmother to do the same with her computer. Just let it go to sleep, it's barely using any power in that state. Not enough for you to worry about a surprise on the next power bill..

I guess electricity is far cheaper where you live. It definitely makes a difference for me. The PC (and peripherals) is probably the biggest single contributor to the electricity bill and, yes, it makes a very measurable difference if I unplug it when not using it vs just leaving it shut down (yet alone in 'sleep' mode, which I'm guessing is even worse). Even when all turned off the PC and various peripherals use a significant amount of power (I've measured it) and it adds measurably to the bill.

Mind you, it works just as well if you 'hibernate' and then unplug it at the mains. Hibernate, fine, sleep, no.

But that's all besides the point - it is a bit silly to have the power button under settings, but its a very minor issue, surely?

Well i just dont notice the increase since i left it on. I live in FL and routinely had a near $300/mo power bill due to the band room in the garage. All the amps and pa stuff would really rack up the bill when using it 3-4 days a week. Much more than my pc when it is in sleep mode anyway.


I cant say why they put the power options down there like they did. Perhaps to leave room for a hardware button like on your phone or tablet that would access that menu with a physical button? Dunno

Also, MS at first had WMC as a standalone option to be purchased, but have since decided to give it away until at least January.

I'm no insider to MS, but to me it looks like they understand they have a turkey on their hands and they have to go all out get as much market penetration as they possibly can, at any cost.

just kinda worried the OP is one of those folks who installed it, saw the Metro UI, freaked out and ran before giving it a real chance.

That's kinda what it sounds like. Most who installed it had the same "WTF...." moment when seeing everything new. It was a scary first day or two because your still adjusting to the changes, but really come to love it once you get accustomed to it.

I use Windows 8 at work on a regular basis and I still hate it as much as ever. Good thing it's not my primary work machine, or it'd drive me insane.

No. The one that he linked is not a standalone. It's an upgrade.
