My wired connection is slower than the wireless.

According to Speedtest net my wired gaming system in my sig gets about 16Mb/s & my wireless laptop gets 29Mb/s. I'm using a Surfboard SB6141 cable modem & an Asus RT-N66U router via Comcast cable. Is it possible that my onboard network adapter is faulty? I double checked that I have the latest driver installed. I'm using this network cable: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812117408
If you think it is the onboard adapter what PCIe card would you recommend?

There are several possibilities, and while the onboard adapter is one possibility it is less likely.

  • It could be the cable
  • It could be that you're connecting to a different Speedtest server which is farther/slower
  • It could be network settings, either on the PC (proxy/VPN/firewall/antivirus) or in the router (VPN/firewall/QoS)

If possible, bypass the router by connecting the network cable directly to the modem (you may have to reboot the router), and then run another speedtest. If the speedtest is fine then it is likely a router issue. If it's just as slow then it's a cable, adapter, or software/configuration issue.

I am assuming that everything (cable wise) is going through the Asus router.

Check to see if there are any settings inside the router that might be causing the slow down.

For that motherboard, did you happen to have the Asus software installed for the IControl?

With ethernet cables the longer the length the more the bandwidth reduces, if there is interference.

only if you exceed the maximum length in the Ethernet specification, which is 100 meters. Cabling issue is going to be poor connectors, smashed or kinked cable, etc., not signal degradation over length.

Right yeah, I've seen both Asus routers and motherboards do some funky things. Good point on the Asus software because at least with ASRock boards, there is a utility for the ethernet that can prioritize latency over bandwidth and do something like this. I would try disabling auto negotiation and make it 1Gig full duplex manually for the NIC (in Device Manager).
