My X1900XT doesn't seem to want to go out of 2D Speeds

Hi,

I've had my X1900XT for a while. I don't game too much but lately I've been thinking about it's overclocking potential and just clock/memory speeds in genera

I have the latest Omega Drivers installed (over ATI ones. FAQ said this is fine as long as I removed the ATI Control Center, which I did). The problem is it seems my clocks are always 500/600 and anytime I raise it even 10%, it crashes the card (no video), Windows freezes, or it reboots the system.

I can play 3D games just fine but even then, I suspect the card never goes to the supposed 3D speeds of 625/725.

When I try to run ATI Tool and click on Find Max Core, it immediately crashes.

I can use ATI Tray Tools' Find Max Core and that works for a little bit before it crashes. I can get memory up to something like 635, then crash.

What's going on here?

It's crashing because the card is in 2D mode and is only using a vcore of 1.175v.

Manually raise the vcore to 1.425v and try again.

Use ATI Tray Tools to enable auto 2D/3D overclocking.

Have you plugged in the PCI-E connector? Cards can get stuck on 2D speeds (if they boot at all) without the PCI-E connector plugged in.

PCI-E connector is plugged in. Good tip though. Damnit, I upped the voltage and ran Find Max Core for a little bit, stepped away, came back and video is off. I hate this!

i think u need to manually set profiles for 2d clocks and 3d clocks. go online to find the default speeds for each... core, mem, voltage. if all else fails go back to CCC 7.5 its fine...

I uninstalled everything and reinstalled Omega with ATI Tray Tools. I left everything default and turned on On Screen Display for GPU Speed, Memory Speed, and GPU Temp. I played both S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Company of Heroes and the whole time it stayed a constant 500, 600, ~50C.

What the?!?

You don't need CCC, the 2d/3d clocks are controlled by the driver. I'm using the bare 7.5 catalyst driver with ATT, and my card has no problems automatically switching clocks, I can even increase the 3d clocks using ATT without creating profiles. If your card is not swtching to 3d mode, there might be a problem with Omega's drivers. But just make sure you're not running the games in windowed mode, because 3d clocks are only used in fullscreen mode.

I am confused how to use ATT? Say I did a fresh install with ATT. Which overclocking option do I use? Overclocking Settings or ATI Overdrive?

I use the Ati Overdrive oc option. That way I don't have to disable any services or mess around with 2d/3d profiles. I just set the 3d clocks.

I also had a problem running Omega Drivers with my x1900XT. Last I checked, they still did not have ATITool working properly with the x1900 series....of course this was several months ago that I checked.

Again, however, I did encounter the same problem as you, inability to set clocks, and clocks stuck at default 2D settings. I've been using the overdrive on ATI's standard drivers. Unless you are running a serious cooling rig and plan on volt-modding the GPU, you will likely not be able to go higher than the range ATI provides (in my personal experience).

You may try the NGO drivers though....I have yet to try them with my main rig, but they work quite well for the Mobility 9700 in my laptop.

Why are you running Omega drivers? Use ATi's reference drivers instead.

I had the exact same problem as you, sygzy, with the exact same GPU. Do what Matt2 said, he sorted out my problem.

And yea have you checked the ATI Hotkey Poller, mine doesn't work for some reason and i had to make 2 seperate settings, a 2D and a 3D setting in ATiTray. And then get the 3D setting to run when it detects 3D applications, and also to up the voltage to 1.475 when in 3D mode.
