My X800XL Bad?

Thats what it looks like when I play, textures are all checkerboard patterns.

Material models/props_canal/canal_cap001 is being applied to a model, you need $model=1 in the .vmt file!

I looked around at Guru3d, and one guy's card was supposed to be "bad". I want to know if there is anything I can do to remedy this.

This issue appeared while using Catalyst 5.2 and Catalyst 5.3, as well as DNA 5.2 drivers. I am running at stock speeds with my 3000+ and X800XL.

I haven't tried any other games besides HL2 and CS Source, so it might be a source engine issue.

Please help!

Sounds like your install file for Source could be corrupted...

I also have a issuse where the specular lighting will randomly turn of... though it's only affected Source...

except for lower clock freq?

I have an x800xl, and have a similar problem on one a certain map for Gary's Mod (based on source). The blocks are much bigger each, but I have the shiny purple checkerboard.

The X800XL feels very smooth, I don't think there is that much of a noticeable difference between X800XT and X800XL.

I am going to try reinstalling HL2, but I downloaded it from Steam, so how would that work? Uninstall and redownload?

ya sounds like some currupt or missing textures. i'd first try reinstalling ur hl2

Would Uninstalling Steam be good? I downloaded my copy of HL2 from Steam, so i guess I would just uninstall steam, and then redownload the files, correct? Or would my copy be lost?

Well, I am quite surprised. I uninstalled HL2 and CS Source, then reinstalled HL2 from Steam. Now HL2 won't even run, it always ends up not responding, even before it switches from the desktop.

I am going to try uninstalling and reinstalling again.

To the above poster, the checkerboard pattern appears everytime I play, and not in the first training level. It started appearing during the Route Kanal level. I played some Far Cry, and there are none of these issues.

The checkerboard has been the replacement of a missing texture since Quake 2. The original Half-Life was based off of Quake 2 and I'm almost certain they migrated that checkerboard to Half-Life 2 as well. There is nothing wrong with your card, the game is just missing a texture for some reason. That's also the reason why every other game is fine.

After the 3rd installation, everything is about clear. When I go in the console though, sometimes it says it is missing some "actor" or something like that, but I have not noticed anything peculiar. Thanks for the help guys, I guess some of the files were dropped while I was downloading it off steam.

X800XL is awesome!

Valve does have a tool that verify's if you have all the needed files and textures.

Just go to steam support and search for "verify gcf" and click the first link. Now you can verify that all your files have been downloaded correclty and are not corrupt.
