My Xbox HDD died. It clicked and went *poof*. The xbox is unmodded, so I can't just drop in another hard drive I assume, so, what is the best route to go about replacing the hard drive without dropping enough cash for a new xbox?

I knew this kind of nonsense would start happening with HD's in consumer appliances... xbox and ipod specifically.....

Nonsense? Um, HARD DRIVES DO DIE. If they didn't, we wouldn't need RAID redundancy for our servers or huge $20,000 tape backups.

Back to the OP - buy a mod chip and a hard drive.

Get it modded. A new HDD with mod is not for piracy. U can use it as a media player, the uses are endless. Emulators really make this system shine. U can buy a new harddrive on ebay, the stock ones I mean. I have seen them for cheap. Open it up and replace.

Out of curiosity, what is the warranty on the XBOX? Is it in line with the PS2 and Gamecube?

Probably the same as most consumer electronics, 90 days.

Im also having problems with my xbox

Getting dirty disc errors all the time, even on brand new titles. Gonna hit it with some cleaner, but if that doesnt work, can i replace the DVD-ROM?

Ive always wanted to toss a Raptor in there with a Serrillel adapter

Do you need a modchip to change the hardware? (id imagine you do)
If you do mod it, can you still use xbox live? I know this was an issue with the original mods, and that there are chips that can disable the mods with a switch now... but that would disable the hardware compatiblity as well wouldnt it?

Sounds like your drive is going by the wayside.

http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Rep...version_comparison.htm

You probably have a Thompson more than likely. There's only certain drives you can replace it with, check XBox-Scene.com for more info.

And you can't add a serial HD to the XBox AFAIK. If you mod it, yes you can still get on XBox Live, the chip has to be off in order to do so. Hardware compatibility? The only thing it disables is running unsigned code on your XBox, meaning you cant use a dashboard program to load up any other outside programs or games you copied onto your hd. (In essence, to put it simply) It doesn't disable hardware.

No, but you would need to replace the hard drive from another Xbox because there's no way you can get the original dashboard back on without a modchip with a blank HD.

The DVD drive is harder to replace because it uses a proprietary power source. But you can always use one from another Xbox.

After doing a little research, both XBOX and PS2 are 90 days, and Gamecube is 1 year. XBOX has an extended warranty availible that extends it to 2 years for $50.

well I have my original xbox hard drive. I believe you can restore the original software onto it, and it would work fine in an unmodded xbox. You want it?

IIRC, you can't do that - it has to do with locking and unlocking the hard drive. The keys are unique to that XBox's hardware. IE, his XBox will try to unlock the hard drive using his key. Yours is keyed differently. I think that's how it works, someone here can probably correct me. He'd need to mod it to properly unlock it, reload the software, then lock it again to use on his box. (It'd be as simple as borrowing a friend's chip)

well that's pretty retarded. All I remember is seeing an option for "reset default xbox dashboard", but I didn't read too much into it.

If that's the case, good luck. I'd just mod the damn thing, it's more than worth it as everyone here has already said

It's called Microsoft's security to keep it from (originally) being read on a PC. If you're talking about Slayers install, then it just reinstalls the default XBox software on the HD.

You are going to have trouble fixing this problem without modding the xbox. Even if you buy a stock hard drive off of ebay or something you will need to lock it with your xbox's hard drive key to be able to run it unmodded. Since your xbox is broken you can only find the key using an eeprom reader ($50, I think) or by modding it and pulling the eeprom info.
