Heads up to existing owners of Ford cars with the MyFord Touch infotainment system, a major upgrade was just released and will be shipped out via USB key/SD card to all existing users soon. You can also get it upgraded at your dealer once they get the upgrade software (end of the week it seems).

The interface has been revamped and performance/reliablity has been drastically improved according to the release notes.

Seems like that was a common complaint so hopefully this will sort it out. I was really impressed with the system when I test drove a Focus Titanium last summer.

I hope this update works as expected. MFT in my Focus is the only thing that bugs me about my car.

Interesting. I've had no complaints or problems with my pony's MFT, I think it is the best in-car nav system ever. The screen response is a bit laggy though, and if they improve that it would be nice. However the DT article says the update is only available for the explorer, edge, and focus. No Mustang update

I spent a couple weeks with an Edge. I came away convinced I wanted an Edge, but even more convinced that MFT is a piece of crap. And I don't think a software update can fix it.

The issue for me is not the software itself (it is cool that it can do all that it does) but the fact that they are making EVERYTHING software controlled.

Cars should have dials I can turn and buttons I can push. More importantly I should be able to do this by feel and muscle memory when I'm driving in the dark. The all touch dash on the Edge is absolutely useless unless you're parked and able to focus on where to put your fingers. The LCDs in the instrument cluster are far more of a distraction than simply reaching out and turning a knob when I want cool air.

I've had a couple Chargers recently & felt the same way so I don't think it's purely a MFT problem. The Charger at least had buttons and some dials but it's still a button fest to change climate settings.

Way not cool.

This is pretty much spot on, BMW figured that out between iDrive 1.0 and 2.0. Now A/C, heated seats are all button controlled. The rest is all through the computer though, which is fine with me. I'd be kind annoyed to change the volume/air settings through a menu rather than just reaching out and turning a knob/pushing a button.

Interesting, in my Focus with MFT all climate controls are button controlled (you can do it via touch screen too). Volume also has physical buttons/knobs (steering wheel and center console). I don't have heated seats but I've seen those can also be controlled by physical buttons.

I have this in my 2012 Focus -

I have separate climate control system with knobs & buttons, steering wheel controls for volume & pre-set changes, plus SYNC voice commands, I have a volume knob too on the dash.

It most definitely is not Idrive or the horrendous Jaguar system where all functions are tied into the screen.

Some things I like in MFT are being removed or limited like the custom wallpapers.

I still hear the Chrysler 8.4" interface is better than MFT but have yet to give it a try.

I've used this sporadically on my Dad's Mustang for a month or two now, since they've had employees beta testing it. It is significantly smoother and faster. I could barely stand it before, but it's actually quite enjoyable now. I think there are a lot of "ease-of-use" optimizations that could still be made, but at least now it works how it was intended to.

Overall, I'd have no qualms buying a car with MFT based on the software upgrade.

I was looking at an Edge Sport and that was a major complaint with Sync so this is a step in the right direction. Wish BMW idrives were upgradeable like that. Instead they like to make you buy a whole new car.

Truth, I can't even add BMW apps because mine is a mid 2011 build as opposed to a later 2011 build. Kinda annoying really.

I went to the dealership today and copied the MFT 2.0 files onto my own flash drive. The entire upgrade process took about 45 minutes - I drove for about the first 15 minutes and parked/idled the rest of the time. Many of my previous settings were saved (radio/Sirius stations).

It is a massive upgrade and a huge improvement (although I didn't mind the previous version too much)! MFT downloaded my addressbook super quick without a flaw. It indexed my Zune with about 619 songs in under a minute and maintained all my album art with no issues (previously MFT was hit and miss with the album art especially after adding new content to the device).

From what I understand the MFT update also requires a new SD Card for the Nav system to work properly. That is the only thing holding me back from doing the same thing HopJokey did.

Also, Kudos to Ford for dealing with this issue.

Could not agree more.
Love the layout and ease of use of the instruments in my Honda. It's the way it should be. Dials and push buttons, and ones that feel good to the touch at that.

Hopefully this update will correct all the lockups I've been having. If I had to guess the bluetooth has been the culprit. Seems like if the phone is connected than it's more likely to lock up. Has anyone here received it yet? Debating whether or not to call them tomorrow.

If you guys don't want to wait for your USB key to get mailed out to you can get the upgrade by downloading it here and copying it onto a blank SD/USB FAT32 formatted disk:

http://www.madison86.com/mft/mft.htm

This was posted by a user on the "Focus Fanatics" board. If you don't have Nav it will be fully functional. If you have Nav and you apply this update without the new SD card with the new maps Nav won't work until you get that card.

Probably going to get my wife a Focus SEL when her car dies, so it is good to hear they're putting effort into it.

Bought a 12 focus Wednesday and downloaded and updated mft yesterday. Went to the dealership today to get the map sd card for my nav today.
You can download the update on syncmyride.com.
Just don't do it if you have nav because the old maps are not compatible.
