anyone use it? any good?

i'm hosting a domain with my semi-dynamic IP (which i can keep static by having something bound to the IP 24 hours a day). however, when my IP does accidentally change, i have to change the DNS records through my registrar, and that usually takes 2-3 days (too long).

so, with myip.org, can i just point the domain to xxxx.myip.org (having bound the subdomain to my IP), and then change the myip ip whenever my ip changes, with changes seen immediately (it seems like that's how it works)...'cause that look uber1337.

anyone have experience or advice?

I prefer www.dyndns.org myself (I actually use *.homeip.net). I also use a program called yiPost to update my dynamic IP automagicly. (yiPost works with a number of dns services) It gives and option for setting an offline IP as well.

i sorta don't want services that go down occasionally, 'cause that would be less reliable than just hoping the IP never changes.

Well, you can open up a big discussion about this sort of thing but I'll try to avoid that.

In the end it all comes down to this:
you get what you pay for.

DDNS services are, for the most part, free. These guys really don't make any money. They get income from banner ads and the occasional donation, but really they do it because they want to.

If you pay for DDNS, you should expect a level of service, support, and reliability proportional to the ammount you pay. However, for free services you don't pay anything. You're banking on these guys to keep things running.


I know that sounds kinda "doom and gloom" but it's reality.

With that being said, I should discuss my usage of dyndns.org. I'm on a dialup (56K) so I don't need a whole lot. I just like having Apache running when I connect so I can host a couple pages. It's just for playing around, nothing more. So, I don't need a whole lot. I did donate money to dyndns just because I think they deserve it. Their website is very very helpful, they have tons of links and they seem to have one of the more reliable services out there. Donate some money and you get lots of extras, but even without donating anything, I think what you get with them is pretty darn good.

Yes, they have had outages. Yes things have gone down, but really, what service hasn't?

My solution: more than one DDNS. I used dyndns.org, yi.org, and dhs.org all with various results. But if you use them all at once, you have a "fallback."
