MySql and PHP frontend question...

I would like to implement a database (mysql) using php as a frontend, as it creates a platform independency and is very easy (quick) to access..

I know Java, and I have also obtained a program called myPhpAdmin from source forge, but I am note quite sure what it does. What do I need to know in order to embark on such a task? Are there any *finished* or modifyable programs that create a webinterface for users? What's the usual price for such an implementation by an expert company?

The question is somewhat criptic. Are you wanting to put up a server using php and mysql??

I agree with Bleep : not quite sure what you want here......

However, rather than pay someone else to put together a PHP frontend with mysql behind it, why not take a little time to learn PHP. If you know java well php will be easy meat.

Not sure what phpadmin does, but I have got php and apache installed on the same box serving a web forum and it works fine. To learn php I used a wrox book called something like "Professional PHP programming". Don't bother with "Beginning PHP" as it spends a lot of time explaining general concepts like arrays etc.

myPHPAdmin is a web interface that allows you to modify the mysql database and create new ones and such, rather than logging into mysql and making the changes from a command line or feeding it pre-made scripts. You definately need myPHPAdmin, it makes everything easier once you know what you want done with the backend.

Assuming you've been able to install mysql/php/and some sort of web server(apache,iis,etc.) successfully, I'd agree with Hullboy and just suggest that you get a basic php book and learn yourself. Us PHP programmers take great pride in our web interfaces and work, however if you're willing to learn it yourself you can save yourself some big bucks. It's easy to learn(it's not very similar to Java, but at least you know control structures and how all that stuff works, so "programming" is easy for you), and you can pound out alot of highly functional pages in a very short time. I've just completed a contract in which I ended up making 78 seperate pages(about half were VERY different from the others), and I think I'm right around 200 hours right now. The time flies when you're having fun and know what you're doing.

Just jump right into it, and use sites like phpbuilder.net when you need just some quick reference. Take a look at their simple code examples, you might even be able to pick it up by looking, rather than needing a fancy book.
