mysql question

I'm running mySQL on machine 1 and I'm coding on machine 2. Machine1 runs Win98 (yeah I know I suck, but it's temporary), so how can I connect to mySQL from machine2?

Machine1's C: drive is mapped as J: on machine2..... and
J:\mysql\bin>mysql
ERROR 2003: Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10061)

I was used to telnet the machine running mysql, but i dont think it is possible to telnet win98....

What are you coding on machine 2? PHP?

Do you understand the client/server system model?

In brief, machine 2 uses the mysql client application to connect to mysql services on machine 1. So you have to instruct the mysql client program on machine 2 how exactly to reach machine 1. It has nothing to do w/ a mapped drive.

If client/server is relatively foreign to you, do some reading up on it. I don't use MySQL, but my recollection is they have fairly good online documentation available.

To explain the error message, localhost means "this machine". So the mysql application (on machine 2) is complaining that there is no mysql server running on "this machine". Hence, you have to instruct it on how to find the mysql server on machine 1.

Make sure the mysql daemon is listening for connections on the network and run 'mysql -h hostname' I believe, you may want to read the docs at mysql.com.

manly - yes I understand the client/server thingy... I knew since the beginning that I needed to tell mysql.exe that it runs on machine1, not machine2 but i thought that the explanation i gave was enough....... but thanks for the reply
