mystery of the disappearing cd-roms

last night i had no problems with my iomega cdrw and aopen dvd-rom, they both worked. this afternoon they have disappeared from my computer. they show up in both the bios and in device manager. although device manager gives the same error for both "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)". i uninstalled both devices and restarted. windows xp installed both drives when i entered so i checked my computer and device manager again, same problem. then i disconnected the drives completely started up windows and then shutdown again. then plugged them back in and booted up windows to the same problem as before.

this is all the troubleshooting i have done. any help would be appericated, other than reinstalling windows im kinda lost.

If you are running XP try doing a System Restore it worked for me when I lost my burner.

if doesnt show up in the list for system restore

Try uninstalling the devices while in Safe Mode (you may see duplicate devices). Also, delete the IDE controllers as windows will rebuild it when booting.

What do you mean it doesn't show up in the list for system restore? Just restore to a point earlier than when the problem occurred and see if this helps. There wouldn't be an option for "restore my dvd and cd drive."

you need to try this:

Open regedit and go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Now delete the keys:
LowerFilters and UpperFilters. NB only one key may be present but still delete it.

Now reboot and your optical drives should function again
