A friend of mine had a really weired bug. He tried to format his new 40gig maxtor drive to install Win ME. He used the Fdisk from the win98se boot disk. He tried to create a 5 gig and one 35 gig partition. Somehow he ended up with 5 gig, an extended partion of 1.4 gig and another Fat partion of 34 gig. He could install Win98 and update to ME, but it left him with a 37gig C and 1.7GB D drive. Partition magic reportet a partition error(overlapsing partitions) and
showed a 6.4 gig and 34 gig drive. After a reformat using w2k boot disk, I tried to install w2k on a 4 gig ntfs volume. but after the initial
format and copy process when it reboots and tries to continue installing with the GUI, it states: system failed. I installed w2k on another drive successfully today and took the 40 gig maxtor with me.
My system can format the drive and norton gives it a clean report.

I will try to install it again today, but I have no idea why it fails.

The system is :

Abit KT7
1Ghz Tbird
512 mb apacer ram(switched for 256MB Micron to be safe, still error)
350W PS
Pinnacle PCTV
Elsa Gladiac 32MB
Nic
Soundblaster 128
logitech optical mouseman

Another error is that the system does not post if you change something in the bios and then try to reboot. you need to switch the PS off and on after that to reboot. Still recognizes the changes in the bios though....

any ideas???

<< Partition magic reportet a partition error >>

wipe the drive and start over. sounds like the bios might want to be updated also!

make sure to fdisk everything including the mbr, just to make sure his drive is running well, actuall goo look at the hd manufacturer website to see if they have some tool to check the hd.

Use the jumper to reset the BIOS, make sure you have unplugged the computer. If you have any special settings in the bios, take note of what they are before doing the jumper. I've seen the KT7 do some weird stuff that was cleared-up after resetting the BIOS. Load optimized defaults when the computer comes up the first time, then do your settings. What version BIOS is he running?
