imho they messed up, if the treadmill is going 11 mph and the plane is going faster (which it looked like it was to me) of course it's going to move forward. i know i know, it doesn't matter blah blah. but i'd still like to see it done that way. that would cover the whole frictionless bearings thing or whatever.

it doesn't matter how fast the conveyor belt goes, that is the point
<trout smack>

i'd still like to SEE that.

WHO CARES. IT DOES NOT MATTER.

BECAUSE THEY ARE TAKING THE TIME TO DISPROVE IT ON THE TV, SO WHY NOT GO THE WHOLE 9 YARDS INSTEAD OF HALF ASSING IT?

Christ, you don't get it.

The plane only looked like it was going faster because it doesn't matter what speed the treadmill goes. It will ALWAYS GO FASTER.

i get it. i just saw it. so why is it such a big deal that i want to see something else? i realize it will work just the same, but i still want to see it, so kindly STFU about what matters or doesn't matter.

putting a plane on a piece of paper going 2 mph on a segway doesn't prove shit to me.

however the plane will never just "stand still" on a treadmill when it has any force from the props/jets pushing it forward.

goddamnit, that's what I thought they were going to do. fuck

thing is, that really is not possible unless something is just holding it in 1 spot. it can't use it's own force to hold still. (atleast that is my conclusion after reading/seeing about this whole debate).

I'm bummed, though... I was counting on the Mythbusters screwing up and crashing the plane, but now it's not looking likely

Now the question is:
At what RAD level can a cockroach fly a plane off a conveyor belt to avoid a lethal dosage of radiation?

How is there anything else to see if it can't occur?

And it sounded like Jamie had it all figured out from the start. Surprise surprise. Jamie rules, that's why.

This must be close to what the Super Bowl feels like for normal people. Finally, the nerds have their show.

I'm still baffled by the fact that I have Discovery HD but neither Mythbusters or Dirty Jobs or really any of the good shows are in HD. What up wit dat?

if you're like me, you have HDT which has replaced discovery HD. I think DirecTV has discovery hd, correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm kinda tired of seeing oc chopers, 1000 places, sunrise earth, and all other kinds of shit.

I'd much rather have the regular discovery HD

re: all the above, thanks.

I have both. Discovery HD definitely has better shows, but Sunrise Earth is soooo pretty

Yes, but if some SUPER TREADMILL could somehow keep the plane in ONE SPOT, the plane could not take off, correct?

*Yes I'm aware that the plane will take off as the experiment is setup. I want to see what situation would make the plane NOT take off.

um. get a speed gun. show the speed the plane is moving at the point of takeoff. set the treadmill to that speed. make plane take off. for kicks, make it 10 mph faster than the plane moves at takeoff, rinse and repeat. that way smackdown can't come on and make the same points i'm making. i'm sure he'd find OTHERS, but at least they'd be eliminating any that could possibly be passed off as logic.

yes if it were a super treadmill to spin it fast enough that the friction of the wheels kept the plane from moving... it would need to be quite fast

thank you

Seriously though, I never read any of the threads. I just assumed this is what they were trying to do. Didn't realize it wouldn't be possible to have such a treadmill

There, you said it - IF some super treadmill were available, then yes, it would be possible.

The bearings in the wheels aren't frictionless, thus they will exert a finite force which is proportional to the rotational speed of the wheels. Yes, it is possible to keep the plane stationary, but you'd need a damn fast treadmill, and it'd likely cause severe damage to the bearings before reaching sufficient speed.

The math is all possible, what I need are some numbers. Wheel diameter, plane mass, and rolling resistance. I think that should do it.

Ooo I've got both of them. I'll have to do more watching.

Wow.

Brain functioning requires effort, other systems in the body, such as breathing, are automatic. One would think you were so dense as to question whether you were even alive since you'd even screw up your automatic processes.

they are way overdoing this. all they need is a set of those rollers that cars are put on to stay stationary, show the plane rolling off them when the car can't. done?

see, you're just set on being an asshole rather than letting them show a little more work. i see that you can't really be dealt with.
